    Touching the Void

I already posted this in the appropriate forum (http://tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19801), but since this one gets all the traffic:

Touching the Void is on Sunday night at 9:00 on PBS.

Watch it. There may be a quiz Monday to make sure you did

good movie but the book is much more detailed and dramatic. Hard to inform the viewer of mountianeering in 2 hours if they never been outside the concrete jungle. Note*( watched movie with non-climber)
Read book then watch movie...or vice versa.

Both compliment each-other and recommended for maximum enjoyment.

Not to get off topic here, but I'll echo teamdirt's take in relation to Alive. Some sections of the book just seem so harsh that it's near impossible to convey on film.

Looking forward to finally seeing Touching the Void.

To continue the mini hijack--I saw Alive after reading the book (riveting and sad) and literally laughed my ass off during the the entire movie. I found it so absurdly bad that it was, in a way, a disgrace to the memory of those who died.
Can't wait to finally see Touching the Void.

Also sorry for the semi-hijack. ("Alive" related)

This summer at the NATA convention, Nando Parado was the keynote speaker for the conference. There were maybe 8,000 certified athletic trainers at the presentation and you could have heard a pin drop in that place as he was telling the story of how they survived.

It was awe inspiring and very humbling to hear him describe the crash, the avalanche that hit the plane, the suffering and finally the realization of how they were to survive was very intense to say the least. To imagine how they for one survived the initial crash and then actually climbed over an Andean mountain range with no technical equipment or winter clothes... it makes you head swim. The only think I could thin of is how in the hell did they do it.

He said he had been back serval times to the crash site and had summited many of the peaks they had to climb on their route. He showed us a picture from the top of the first peak they summited. As they summited they were thinking they would see the green lowlands just below them, and all they saw was snow covered peaks for as far as they could see. It looked like an aerial photo looking out over an entire mountain range. It is impossible to imagine the amount of heartache, dissapointment and dispair they must have felt at that time. But his whole message was one of hope and determination. That no matter who bad things may appear if you are determined enough to make something happen you can do it.

It is one of the thing in my life that I will never forget seeing or hearing.

Seriously? I read the book first, too, but thought the movie did a pretty good job. Certainly better than most movies that attempt to follow books.

Both good movies, been meaning to read the books. I still have to finish "Under the Banner..." and John Stewart's book.

9 o'clock eh? I think I'll be watching the Alexander the Great thingy on Discovery.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Yeah seriously. I could not put down the book, it was amazing, but I thought the acting and the screenplay were pathetic.

I thought it was pretty well done. I was grateful the acting was closer to subtle than overdone.

Watched it with the in-laws last night for the second time. That show is very real. Some very scary, thought provoking moments. They kind of cut some stuff out, but it was still awesome. That flick is super inspiring.

perhaps the finest climbing flick I have seen. The book does cover more detail, but what do you expect? For those who have spent time in the mountains and know how partnerships go, the film and book bring strong images.

How's the new one doing Tap?

That might be #2? I have no idea....

I was thinking of something else though, something more hardware oriented.
