Looking for serving job in SLC, no experience

Hey everyone, I just turned 21 last year and want to get into the serving game to pay for the rest of college. I have worked for Gold's Gym doing outside advertising for 3 years (on and off) and have spent the last year working for Pizza Hut delivering pizzas. So I do have customer service experience, I have good people skills and I can hold a job, (never been fired).
If anybody knows of a decent place to work that might give me a shot with out having a year or more of experience, that would be great. PM me or post in this thread with any leads. Any help at all would be great, thanks.

I have *heard* that the way to get restaurant serving experience is to lie and say you already have restaurant serving experience. They won't really check your references... Esp if you go to a lower-key place... nothing Michelin rated.

    Good luck!

    Sincerely,

^^^that is true. also, no matter what you say your experience is they will train you on everything so you wont be very far behind.
Perhaps you'd be more comfortable on epicski or Paula's Ski Lovers, AltaNancy.

get a friend of yours to pretend they were your manager at some place that has since closed. the other way is to start busing tables and work your way up to waiter.

Honestly, do the busser gig move your way up. I've worked in F&B as a server, FOH mgr, bartender for 10 years. My experience, I avg. 18-20%, w/ 15% as my low, I barely get 10% (Unless they are fuckin' foreigners, then you are fucked regardless), maybe I've done this gig for a while & know what guests want. You have to know multi-task on the fly at times, when you get weeded, stuff compounds on you more & more, you are in an endless shit-storm.

If show you are worthy as a busser, you'll get bumped up, if you lie get a server gig & suck, you be easily replaced. There are bunch stupid servers out, a good Front of House mgr. can spot the difference.

Serving sometimes can seem easy, there are a lot of little things to know can make guest always give money to ya. If you work somewhere that is really busy & can't hack it, you be 86ed or demoted. From my own experience If you suck they'll check references if you lied on your app.

I'll stop ranting, nothing I hate more than someone lying their way into serving gig that now little about what to do. Do the smart thing & work your way up, you'll get more trust & respect that way. Maybe I've worked at busy places that actually checked references.

If you want to serve liquor, don't bus. Try to get a gig as a bar back. Last night, I spoke to a guy at No Name. That is the advice that he gave.

How about a bussing job that comes with a ski pass and then potential serving in the Summer? Job is in Park City though, not SLC.

Congrats, now if you can manage to keep up and do at least half the work of your mexican counterparts there you will be good.

...actually they will probably still fire you for being a lazy gringo

I'm thinking of picking up a couple doorman shifts at a bar this year to supplement my lost hours at my normal gig.
