    Question Quick ALTA Question

    So,

I think I might be at Alta for 4 days in December (18-23 including fly days). Right now they have a 54 inch base- how big a base do they need to cover up the rocks and get everything open?

    Should be sweet! Thx, -kb

It was good back on October 20th with a 35" base.

I still haven't hit a rock, but then again I've only been on frontside pretty much.

Well, the rocks are never fully covered up. It just creates different lines. The base will be good. The Utah Mini is scheduled during that time. Check the thread in the Summit forums (i'm too damn lazy to post link).

Of course, the way things are going, the new lift won't be open by then.

Alta is always good. You just have to find where the goods are. The goods will be there--go git it!!

2 years ago we had a 50" base in january. i had plenty of fun skiing then, but always like more. the castle/east castle were being bombed today so that means that they will likely have it open soon. everything that usually opens during the year has enough to be skied.

The inportant thing to ask about the base is not how deep is it? Rather, you should ask how low can it go?

Sounds like all that matters is the snow that falls then. Should know tonight whether I will be there or not in December!!!- the Utah Mini sounds sweet. Here's to hoping (scratch that- making) it happen, -kb

rumor from a guy that is putting up the lift is that someone spliced the cable wrong and it had to be taken down and redone. also some of the towers aren't to spec. instead of putting in new ones they just tested (used a crane with a tensioner to pull the tower out of place. if it goes back in place then it passes). the ones that pass the test are filled with concrete. the guys that are putting up the lift are skeptical. they think it may derail when they first crank it up. that doesn't bode well for a good start to things. theses are just rumors i heard from a guy i skied with today. he has friends who are working on the lift.

Rock coverage in LCC is great right now. I think it's because we got so much heavy snow without any skier traffic, so it all stuck. There are parts of Baldy that are ALWAYS rocky, yet they are covered. Elevation and aspect will play a part, but you're not skiing the gnarlier stuff there anyway.

there are waaaaaaaay to many rocks here, your best bet would be to check out deer valley, dont expect any good terrain to open up at Alta this year.
