It has been my experience that you will nary come across another skier/boarder out by Roundtop. In the 4 summers that I've been patching it up around there with Vets we've perhaps come across maybe one or two other folks out there schussing the same time we are. The masses that usually frequent that area are touron hikers, backpackers, and weekend summer warriors looking for a quick, easy commune with nature (i.e. a mellow hike they can bang out before brunch or after lunch). As RF mentioned, it's really only this season that the whole patching thing seems to have taken off (i.e. more than just the usual suspects such as Vets and Powdork), presumably because there was so much snow left over and much of it was super easy to access.
As for the masses powdrhound hinted at, who knows? "The Patch" is a well-known entity, with super easy access and attracts a lot of park oriented skiers/boarders from Sacto, Jackson, Pioneer, Pollack Pines, and of course South Lake. You usually find at least 3-5 kids up there practicing rails and hitting mini-kickers on the weekends because it's so easy to access.
Respect is due to everyone, but the honest truth is that the younger jibber kids (I used to be one) have been patching it up 12 months a year around tahoe for a lot longer than Ive lived here (summer 2002)... One of the things that got me most stoked on tahoe was dragging boxes and rails out to forestdale in august of 2002 for my first late summer turns.
I think the advancement of backcountry gear (mostly weight reduction) is responsible for the increased interest in skiing patches... either way, Im stoked to have more year round ski friends!![]()
I know Vets is gonna post up something cool soon...but for now. Vets, JLA415 and I slayed the gnar at Highlands Lakes, thanks to Powdork's recon efforts. Report at http://unofficialalpine.com

Ahhhh shit man, just saw on NBC news that Shaun White announced The Patch was going to be his home resort next July and August. WTF, during the news interview he also added: "look for my new playstation game next summer: shaun white: from the patch to the palace"...balls

There goes the theory that there was gonna be a SquawPineWoodWoodPatch pass this year!
My first patch session was in 93', which just so happens to line up with the state of California granting me a drivers license. There's some 'patch' footage in the Swarm...just check my Vimeo page.
*Edit - here's a shot from the Patch in September 99'

Also, from TWD:
" I’m going to stick with 75-95% of average snowfall as my prediction for now."
Completely spoilt now. Anything less than a ridiculous 150%+ winter is a letdown. But I guess average will have to do since that's what a couple sources are predicting:

apparently none of us watch enough TV, because I'm sure if the Tahoe maggots were paying attention to the Dodge promotions one of us would be the owner of a free Dodge Journey.
I didn't know about the promo until watching football today, and instantly said "dude, driving south past Emerald Bay, that looks a lot like Hope Valley," and sure enough the Dodge was parked out in Hope Valley. Woulda been easy pickins for any mags in Xmas valley watching the Youtube feeds!
