My, my, my how things change in a year.

This time last year it seemed like it was just Me'n Vets holding down the Patch Skiing banner of radness (and often taking mad sneers 'n jeers from the multitude of Maggotdom in the process). I recall being told by a number of folks on this very thread that they thought it was a complete waste of time/energy to hike 3+ miles to ski a drive-way sized patch of sun-cupped junk snow in the middle of August/September.

This time this year Cali Patch Skiing has become a major trend. It's like every hipster wannabe on TGR has taken up the mantle. Crikey, even Powdork has got his youngun's patch skiing! WTF is the world coming to?

I don't know whether to cheer with joy, cry tears of sadness or find a new hobby.

from the woods lake trailhead i'd say 4 hours round trip for just one run. add an hour per additional run. make it saturday.

yeah, definitely easy - only 2 mile hike from Woods Lake up and around the old mining site. PD does it in his AT boots! I did it in my snowboard boots ... but really you should get yourself some off-road crocs for easy trailwalking and letting your feet soak in R/T lake while you're drinking beer. If I didn't already have plans this weekend I'd be up there ... maybe Sep 10?

My easy turns are almost gone... its still only a 10 minute hike to the blackwood patches but theyre only about 200-300 feet of vert and the horse flies are outta control!

This post made me laugh. I can definitely roll with the hipster wannabe label. This was the first August that I actually had some time available to think about patch skiing...not to mention epic summer ski conditions that are now turning into great fall ski conditions. Damn it...tied down in a classroom and a weekend summer job a lot this month. It's time for you to come back to Tahoe and assert your dominance Patch Master.

If you park at Woods Lake, I would suggest taking the trail to Winnemucca Lake on the lookers left side. Its super smooth and fast. The lookers right trail that takes you to Round Top lake has a ton of switchbacks, rocks, rivers etc. You can get to the base of the lake in 30-40 mins if you are moving quickly. From there, you can start hiking to the West toward the Sisters.

As far as 'patch' skiing is concerned, it has been in my vocab for a looooong time.

Fortunately, this hipster wannabe took up a new hobby so you didn't have to (as the 10560:1 driving-to-skiing distance ratio is not particularly magnetic.) Still involves skis/independent legs/blown knees/concussions and the like. Except instead of a 200ft patch I have the entire Delta.

Still looking forward to the day I can once again injure myself in powder though.

I was going to ask you that same question.
Here are a few possibilities with added comments:
Roundtop/Sisters (still lots of snow, multiple choices, relatively longer hike in, more people)
Highland Lakes/Folger Peak (not as much continuous snow, multiple choices, much shorter hike)
Leavitt Lake/Ski Lake (skied there last weekend so I know it will still be good, rough drive)
Dunderberg (still lots of snow, multiple choices, rough drive)
Saddlebag (should still have lots of choices with snow, boat shuttle to shorten the hike, longer drive)
All of the above are good choices. There may be other possibilites too. I'll call tonight after I pick up my car (I really hope so.)

Powdork...any shots of the patch you skied today from a wider angle that better shows pitch and length. Currently pulling a plan together for Sunday with Vets...

^yeah, i was in a hurry before. we skied two lines, neither of which qualified as patches, since they both were connected from top to bottom. this is the second. i don't think i have any pics of the first

looks to me like the largest continuous vert (not the best vert) could be this line off 99 steps at the wood. i'm guessing it's at least 1000' though it looks pretty runneled, er,.. i mean spined. yeah, it looks real good.

^it looks like it could easily be 2000 vert if you built a kicker and hopped the dirt gap...

Skied the same shot above Roundtop Lake from Powdorks photo this morning from just under the peak through the chute and then lookers left of their tracks. Couldn't classify it as smooth but even so it was well worth the effort. As far as the masses, I was at the trail head @9am and I didn't see a single other skier/snowboarder by the time I made it back to my car a little before 1pm

This image makes me said that I spent all my credits. Instead I might make a hike to see what the Gulch of Doom looks like in summertime.

i thought i already replied to this but i guess not. if you look closely i think it does connect, but the snow is hidden from the angle i was shooting from

lower under round top was the best snow we found just because of a better sun angle. we never really broke a sweat with the moderate temps and the northerly stuff stayed chattery. makes me think about the more easterly facing stuff above winnemucca for tomorrow since we have to leave similarly early.

I have to say "Patch Skiing" is pretty awesome. Some guys at work were talking about skiing this weekend there... It is picking up and you guys started it. Kinda cool to be so cutting edge, but I'm sure crappy at the same time since you have more traffic now.

    Still though, pretty cool.
