All routes now shut...
I just spoke with my fiance who is in SF trying to spring a client from jail and recommended that she not attempt to drive back here tonight. Even down here in Gardnerville it's pretty serious, and this thing is just getting started. If you make it up to the lake, tomorrow will be too deep to ski anything. I'll be out there, wallowing....
ride bikes, climb, ski, travel, cook, work to fund former, repeat.

Alpine just added a road closure map to their website.
Here's a link to the page.

not counting days 2016-17
Based on NOAA predictions, I wouldn't think it'd even be worth going up until Sunday figuring patrol will be occupied trying to get stuff open through Saturday, anyways. At least that's my plan. After being snowed in Kirkwood for three days last weekend with not much open and bored out of my skull, I'm thinking more conservatively this time and am just going to day trip. Unless the clouds part and the sun shines down, that is.
Made a few laps at Homeboy today in hurricane winds. Came home to absolute nukage in TC. I think 10-12 inches since 11am at my house already. Snow might get wind affected and not ski too deep. It was much fluffier at my house in TC than up top at Homewood with the wind. Tomorrow will be great if anything steep gets open. I don't think I'd attempt the drive up tonight. Road crews are not keeping up and the new snow is going to fly with the wind.
Alpine has been over reporting their snow totals for more than a couple years. These days, I actually get my reality check from Squaw on how much has fallen if I don't have access to the interwebz. Don't know where Alpine's stakes are, but they are in generous placements for sure and not representative of the hill as a whole.
Ya think?138mph gust recorded at the top of squaw an hour ago.
Funny when I first moved here it was the exact opposite. I was under the impression that their stake above the sisters had been used forever....maybe not. Like three years ago, one of their marketing guys comes running in shouting "I just figured out how to get more snow than Kirkwood!"![]()

Sierra @ Tahoe closed to just the Easyrider lift at 1pm, which is when we left. And then we were held up on echo summit for1.5hours while caltrans did some avy work on highway 50. While we waited, the truck collected about 4 inches of snow. The few runs that we did make though? pretty damn good.. especially the run after a quick hike up towards grandview express. It made the whole outing worthwhile, despite riding for only 2 hours.
Alpine tomorrow... some way, some how. lol.

Gunna be DEEP the next few days. Ride with friends who have shovels and don't dig directly to your vicitim. Dig alongside them instead so the snow doesn't fall down on top of them as you get lower. EXCAVATING WITH NO STRATEGY IS A GOOD WAY TO KILL YOUR COMPANION
I just told my buddy to hold off till Sunday.
Too bad once the snow stops, it is going to be sunny.
Made it for the first 2 runs on 6 (if you missed them it is because Kirkwood opened at 8:50 and was closed by 9:30) and 1 on 11 today. Was Dank if you care. Insta Orgasim. Drove the Spur home after locking the keys in the car and getting hooked up by mr. nice guy skier tow truck guy . Man that drive was nuts... lots of suby eating wind drifts.
another deep, blower day on KT (before they shut it down). rolled up at 8:15 and there was no line, we got 5th chair up. first tracks down west face was unbelievable. deep, cold, and long. next lap was red dog ridge (or as i re-named it "me, myself and i" b/c i was the only one put there) which was deep and creamy. rock garden. chute 75. all good. then the fun stopped
i've never been able to understand why people say this.
i've only been here since 2000, but feel that squaw has been under reporting consistently the whole time...
for years i used to go to this site to find out exactly how much snow squaw was getting before they would report it:
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/rev/remotedata/sqwhic.php
it used to be such that you could add up the numbers in the "Hrly" column, multiply the result by 12, and it would always match the amount of fresh snow squaw was reporting at high camp exactly.
it stopped working a few years ago... the data in the "Hrly" column returned this year, but i don't think it matches the squaw report anymore. i've only tried it twice this year and it did not match.
[/geek rant]
Still waiting...
I'm thinking the same thing. Did the same thing at KW last week .. did get prettty boring on 8 and 5. Sunday / Monday will probably be prettty damn good unless the temps jump up on monday. Thinking of day tripping sunday or staying over if i can find someone else interested.
My 8:20 arrival had me 2 chairs behind you. Got 6 in and was in line before they closed it down. Made a few Red Dog-->Far East runs including 1 incredible one down Jeff's Run.
Don't know how tomorrow's gonna turn out. Definitely expecting late openings.
And the joke always used to be that Squaw would check Alpine's snow report and add a couple inches. Guess times have changed.
