Does Once is Enough count if you slip into the entrance? What if it's your first time?

Do you get a waiver on not needing the straightline to claim it if you skied it on JUNE 18?

LongShortLong popped his Once cherry on Saturday as well. We'll be back on a pow day to make it right ...

Awesome conditions on the upper 1000' of Kirkwood on Saturday. A little sticky on lower angle but freaking smooth snow on the steeps, and no bumps until you get down to the top of 11. Face of the wall was holding gooooooods, dropped in two laps off the face in super smooth carveable buttery mashed corn. The upper cliff band between the chair and the saddle entrance to the Wall is still covered, and just FINALLY starting to poke through again. Snow all the way to the bottom of 10 and 11 ... I'm hoping they run that instead of 6 over 4th of July weekend. Waterfall still goes but not for long, I'm guessing it's a mandatory by Tuesday. Cirque entrances still super fat, go get em done! Vista burning fast and pretty gnar right now. Sentinel filled and so are all the spur lines.

Yes! Good times ... pics will be coming soon. Poop chute was a pretty high reward to effort ratio, go get it before the entrance gets burned out! I have to say, the 186 full carbon Lhasa is a damn fun ski on steep corn. I didn't think my 130 pounds soaking wet could drive them, but they really really like that kind of snow. Thanks again powpig and splat!

    Alright nerds....

Looks like I have 100% clearance to do the following:

    1) Leaving work just after mid-day on Wednesday and headed over Tioga. Going to snap photos and possibly due a run or two off of Ellery Bowl...we have the late light so why the hell not? Anyone want to meet up?

    2) Going to rock Mammoth and Thursday and shred the hell out of it before headed to South Shore for family lake fun for the weekend.

Not sure on my Sunday plans but they may include a bit of a ski at Kirkwood or just wait until the 2nd when I can actually ride the lifts.

Just banged out Mt. Judah down to Poop Chute via the PCT. Snow is still holding and was pretty damn bueno for late in the afternoon. PC is getting soft and smeary (but as stated, it was between 2 and 4 that I was hitting it, so it had been baking all day). There's still a ton of stuff up off the Donner Lake facing side of Mt. Judah...so much so that I was kicking myself for not getting an earlier start.

Oh yeah, somebody hit the chute to looker's left/skier's right of Poop Chute, which had a slightly sketchy straightline run-out (about skis width and several mandatory rock hops/jumps). I didn't see 'em hit it, but their lines were there.

Looks like KW is changing their tune about skiing on the 4th.

No more "top to bottom" skiing, but walk on/ walk off of 6. Too bad, as they still have plenty of snow to actually run chair 10.

Alpine is pushing snow around to keep their promise, but not looking like that is happening at KW.

And now 5 is not mentioned in the promo, but still listed in the "details". Anyone have some inside information or know how to get a hold of Coop (he is not answering his email)? My godson was getting stoked to ride lifts, but he will not be stoked to down climb off 6 like we did last year - or hike out to the Wall. Currently it looks like the best bets are to hike from 6 to 10 and then ski down, as word is 6 does not have snow extending to the bottom.

Come on KW - run 10/11 and don't worry about very few non skiing peep who will hike from 6 to Glove Rock and need to down load. Or at least run 6/11.

EDIT: now no mention of Chair 5. Too bad people made plans based on what they previously advertised. My godson is going to be bummed, as will his younger brother.

Coop is in Baja last I heard. A lot of the full-timers leave the country and go surfing for the summer.

Interesting. Because according to the website, if you want to rent a Cat in June, you are told to email coop@kirkwood.com. Maybe someone else is supposed to be responding to the email, but it does not seem to be happening. Maybe when he returns he'll tell the folks to just run 10 & 11.

DSR was pushing around snow yesterday. Though I can't figure out if it's so they can re-open (their website hints at the possibility of "Summer Skiing") or if they are getting ready for that 4X4 Extreme Crawling event they host (saw a Cal-Neva Extreme super RV at DSR today, though according to their site, they aren't gonna be tearing up the hill until July 9th).

I gotta say, Sugarbowl is holding seriously. That may be the best bet for the 4th, except they're only running lifts on the 4th and only for present and new passholders.

I did not get the "get out of town" card, so I will be surfing in between diaper changes. But I will be sure to let the Mrs. know I am missing the best day of the year.

Anyone been down to Mommoth recently? I am thinking of heading over from SF to hit the airbag/park and maybe get a hike in somewhere.

I am 95% sure that Ellery will still be skiable. I won't say it won't be bumpy, but it should still be fun.

Amazing skiing at Tioga and along 395 all last week. Snow's disappearing fast, but plenty of lines still good to go. Folks nailed just about everything off of Dana and the Plateau.. Ellery should still be worth a ski; cornices were still hanging on Saturday, not sure what's up now. Glacier Canyon exit is melting, but Dana Couloir still good.. To the north, Saddlebag Road should be open - easier access up to False White, White, Conness and North Peak. To the south, all kinds of classic lines begging for it. Bloody Couloir on Friday was outstanding. East Side: The Eternal Stoke!!

Mt. Dana (Ellery out of sight lookers left)

    Dana Coul.

Road to Bloody good to go..

    Seriously, solesides -- gorgeous work.

6er (and others heading to Mammoth): I think that Sinecure is currently there, having gone through Tioga. Those who know his digits should use them.

Looks like Squaw is gonna do it up right over the 4th....

From Squaw Valley USA — Squaw Valley USA (June 16) — As Americans fire up their backyard barbeques across the country, Squaw Valley will be hosting a sizzling 4th of July Weekend jam packed with summer skiing and riding, concerts, barbeques and pool parties. With record-breaking season snowfall now totaling 810 inches, Squaw Valley currently boasts a 14-foot base and fully snow-covered peaks.

The party kicks off on Friday night with a free concert by Stung, a Police tribute band, and continues all weekend long with DJ pool parties and daily barbeques at the High Camp Pool & Hot Tub, live music at Gold Coast and the Fine Arts & Crafts Festival Friday through Sunday in the Village at Squaw Valley.

Squaw Valley will operate six lifts from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. across 2,000 skiable acres on Saturday, July 2 through Monday, July 4, weather permitting. Lifts scheduled to run include the Funitel, Gold Coast Express, Shirley Lake Express, Links, the Cable Car and, recently added, Siberia Express. Lift tickets for 4th of July weekend will be $49 per day for adults and $12 for kids 12-and-under. Skiing and riding will be free for 2011-12 Squaw Valley season passholders, and all skiers and riders will get a free commemorative 4th of July T-Shirt on Monday, July 4, while supplies last.

To truly make this Independence Day weekend one to remember, Squaw Valley has added a free Big Head Todd and the Monsters concert and a fireworks display to weekend line-up on July 3. Widely known for their legendary live shows and alternative blues-rock sound, Big Head Todd and the Monsters will take to the KT Sundeck stage for a free, all-ages concert starting a 7:45 p.m. Directly following the concert, Squaw Valley’s fireworks display will kick off at 9:15 p.m. with the best viewing from the KT Sundeck and The Village at Squaw Valley.

Great shots solesides and great plan Squaw. I'll still be at KW hiking about because (1) I have a pass and (2) a place to stay and (3) and 9 week old who will take turns in different friends hands. But damn - Squaw is looking to do it right. Might need to drive up there for a day with the 5 yr old and get some turns.

BTW, Alpine is still planning for ski on/off of Summit 6 and maybe Roundhouse. Another option.
