What's the word on winds for tomorrow? I'm thinking KW is a no-go ... If anyone is thinking of hitting Sierra, hit me with a PM. I'll gladly entertain you with some epic beaters (if there are airs to be had?)

Kirkwood was really mind boggling today. Chair 6 going at 910 am which was pretty incredible considering the huge dump, the lack of vis, and the howling winds that mae the drive though Hope Valley a game of "don't let those taillights get away from you!"

Also mind boggling was that without the ridgelines open in the morning, Chair 6 terrain is soooo filled in right now that it's flat and there are no more airs. Feels like not much terrain steeper than 30 degrees now. So flat that the first two untracked runs down Olympic and Janek were just waist deep straightlines from top to bottom - it was too deep to turn. So it was fun and silly but ... I was kind of bored. The fingers are low angle fat chubby toes now! Once the Sentinel / Pali traverse went and we got into more hydroplanable wind effected fast hero snow it was on ... Great stuff.

10 didn't go btw and I doubt it goes tomorrow unless the winds vanish.

oops and dan cliffs should still have something left. that, by the way, is not something only hitting kirkwood. over the falls in mott is about ther only thing left to hit on the north facing side, and it's really more like over the eddy. the sunny sides of everything still have some features.

It looked like 6 was completely backed up, so I was actually lapping 11 (even though I replied as though it was 5). When they put 6 on hold there was a mad rush over to 11 and then it became a total cluster, so my buddy and I went in to grab some food and see if things cleared up. I won't make that mistake today, though. In Kirkwood now and access from both directions is closed, so I'll definitely be on 6.

We actually hit dan cliffs, but schralph now has a clean bill of health and may have memory loss.

Yesterday was perhaps the craziest 36 hours of baby sitting. Drove up to KW with my 5 year old gold son. Left SF around 2PM. Snow began to stick around Jackson Rancheria. The animal statuary farm was covered in a nice dusting of snow. The road was slush, then rutted up to 5K. We hit the Spur around 6:15.

Traffic was stopped. In the avy paths. We stopped just before the first avy path. Turns out two cars had tried to cross some avy debris ranging from a few to 8 feet deep. An Audi and a Volvo were stuck and a group of folks were just sitting, waiting.

The Volvo had three kids in it. I went back, talked to my god son, grabbed my shovel and started yelling for help. No one had shovels. A few had snow boards. We went to work, in an active path, diggin the folks out, so we could break through. More should up. It seems if you drive a Subie, you carry a shovel. When Caltrans showed up and yelled for us to get back in our cars we almost had one car cleared. They let us continue work.

We busted out the first car around 6:45. The second soon after. Opened the Spur, and got down to KW. I am sure it closed right behind us. Dug out his house (kind of), and went to Bub's. I had Torpedo, he had corn dogs, fussball and some pool. Thanks to the dudes that let him shoot a few shots.

More digging, moving the car, jumping some berms, driving down an unplowed two foot deep street, and digging out a parking spot. Good times. We got to bed late, and hit the powder in the morning. I only skied from 10:15-11:45 and again from 12:45-3:00, while he was in JETS, but that snow was the goods.

Back for a Monday/Tuesday trip if all goes as planned. I am enjoying March.

Planned to go to Homewood with Sinecure, but Mineral Springs Trail hadn't been plowed in time for me to get my gear from my locker before avy control would close Alpine Meadows road.

Oh well. I'll get some work done today, and ski tomorrow morning.

Is 6 opening today? I would have thought it would be on wind hold with the weather that hit the bay last night.

Never made it up this weekend, which appears be a good thing from a safety perspective and not sitting in my car for eternity and a bad thing that I can't say I won't make it to work on Monday because I am stuck up there.

Some resorts are now over 600" of snow for the year and many more likely will be after this storm gets done, and its March 20th. Insane.

    Be safe out there.

Stuck at the airport in Sac. My girl's likely stuck in the 80 closure so no ride for me anytime soon.

Total nukage at S@T right now.

I'm very curious whether 6 can go at KW. If so, some of you are lucky bastards!
My money is on not happeneing ...

Yes - I know we hit Dan cliffs but the left line was slid/scoured (looked like the same as oops) and the right hit off of Dan seemed like 5 feet? Once Sent/Pali opened it was a different story.

    Slay it well today folks!

Update from S@T - patrol says it's really active up there. Bad wind loading and movement from ski cuts etc. No lifts going cept for Broadway.

Be safe and stay safe for anyone playing in the bc!

When 6 reopened in the afternoon yesterday, kirkwood went off. My best lap of the day was skiing waist deep untouched at 4pm. Wow. Just ridiculous.

PowPig, I will be back in Sac later today, give me a call if you are still stuck at the airport....

The Dad, one of these days we will actually take a few runs together!

As for Alpine, the skiing that we had access to was awesome. Over on the secret traverse under alpine bowl chair, the steeper stuff provided many face shots. We were able to traverse out as far as the area below counterweight and sherwood before they finally shut that area too.

I still am not sure what alpines reason was for staying locked down. While it was windy, I have seen much worse with them open. When I got home I checked the remote sensors and they confirmed my thoughts that the winds were high but still doable?? They can definitely be annoying sometimes.

In my 20/20 hindsight I would have stopped at Sugar Bowl who apparently fully opened!

Damn 4matic, hope you get your awesome day being a rare earth superhero!

Silly fun white room hero turns where I was at S@T and no lines today thanks to accidents on the road. Untracked thigh to navel deep every lap .... Still plenty left but I might be toast after 10 untracked Grandview laps with waiting at the lift ...

I wish I had a Winterstick swallow for yesterday, today, the rest of the week ...

Anyhow KT was epic today, i rode bell to bell and got pretty much fresh tracks on everyrun, and averaged waay more than a run an hour. The windloading/buffing in rockgarden/dead tree/ah cutes was insane!
The complaint is due to the fact that many of the skiers have no business being on KT in conditions like yesterday. And skiing Aahs chute first run is retarded as well.

People need to respect mother nature much more. Just because you can ride a lift to access it doesn't mean it is safe under these conditions.

On that note, a big slide just came down across from River Ranch and is reported to have hit a couple cars.

There's a lot more to alpine closing besides winds. Have you seen the cornice situation lately? Do you realize how many ridges that slide regularly you get access to get underneath when summit is open? And roundhouse puts you over in that deer camp area that rips from above frequently. And Beaver has been known to rip all the way down to the groomer below the face or whatever it's called. That snow yesterday was some of the lightest I've ever seen here, all sitting atop a very well defined hard layer from those wet storms last week. The windloading up there with this stuff is no joke. This is the same crest that squaw closed yesterday for the same reason. Alpine doesn't have it's own micro ski area like KT.

Today is even worse......another few feet of wetter snow on top of all that rocky mountain poofter shit.

FWIW, this ISN'T the typical backside of KT on alpine meadows road. But if I lived in those houses, I'd be somewhere else today.

Looks like the Sky is on hold, as well as Dipper, Tamarack and Comet. Projected winds up to 20mph sustained tomorrow. FUCK. I think I'm going to drive up tonight anyway.
