Wow, can't believe bloody got that much snow.
And questioning C.P. is kind of lol.
Am contemplating doing some riding on Hotlum-Wintun this week but not sure if the fun factor/snow conditions will out weigh the effort. There's a shit ton of snow though.
This was Sept 30th (photo by jbaysurfer):

Wow, I just drove past Shasta a couple weeks ago... I don't remember that much snow!
okbye
Hot Shots updated today.
i disagree. if you have a question like this, who better to ask. nothing wrong with not knowing, unless it's because you didn't ask.
there could be many reasons, or no reason at all. climbing couloirs there are many other factors besides what you want to show up in the photo. and other times you may actuallywant the track to show up in the photo. here, i think they just wanted a vantage where you could see all the way up the coolie. i wasn't there though.![]()
Actually, I thought he was asking about snow safety and was referring to C.P. making bad decisions based on a wide angle photo.....dunno why I thought that. I don't read good or something.
I thought he was merely asking "Why the f@#k does everybody hike right up the middle of coulouir and ruin a pristine run instead of hiking up the side and leaving the center portion untouched so you can lay down some nice untarnished turns?"
Personally, I viewed it as a purely esthetic query.
That said, I think it looks cool if you have a boot-pack line up the middle and then you make your turns on either side of the boot-pack on the way down, kind of like a DNA helix. And it's even cooler if your homie powder 8's your turns.
I created a separate thread for this, but realize it probably should be in this one as well. I'm looking for a couple members for a ski lease at Alpine for the season. Here's what I wrote in the other thread:
I've leased a house at the base of Alpine Meadows for the season. Yes, you can ski home and you can walk to the mountain in the morning. No getting stuck in traffic, road closures, etc. And you can pop home for lunch if you are so inclined. We are looking for a few more members to share the lease with us. We will be a group of mature adults, mostly with kids of various ages. This will not be a big party house.
The condo: Three bedrooms, three bathrooms, living room, kitchen, dining area, 1 car garage, wood stove, TV, etc. No hot tub, but we have great views and did I mention you can ski home? One bedroom has two bunk beds, one has a queen and one has a king plus enough room to set up a temporary airbed if we happen to have a big crowd one weekend. There is no shoveling required.
We will have 4-5 "shareholders" in the lease. I use the word shareholder because I expect we'll all have different situations. I'm single with two kids who will be there for Xmas, and one of them will be there a couple weekends in Jan/Feb plus ski week. The other kid probably won't get to ski much after Xmas. The other family that's in so far is a couple with an infant (well behaved and quiet). I work as a part-time ski instructor at Alpine and so does Alon (husband in that couple). I expect to be up there 3 weekends/month and Alon will be there a little less frequently than me, but he'll also be there for Xmas break and probably ski week.
We'd love to find another couple, family or a few singles. I won't know what the costs will be until we finalize the membership, but costs should be in line with a normal ski lease. It would be great if we could find some people who like to go mid-week or maybe spend a week or two up there sometime other than Xmas and ski week.
PM or email if you are interested and we can discuss details.

In any case, if you're ever really in this situation make sure you at least bargain in a couple of fluffers.

I shared a ski house with Sinecure for two years and can vouch for him. Just don't make him sing karaoke. Trust me on this.
not counting days 2016-17
Tracks in couloir are far doper when there's a boot track down the center:
] $ [
] $ [
] $ [
] $ [
] $ [
] $ [
] $ [
] $ [
(just my 2cents in passing about bootpacking up the center)
there are safety issues: loose rocks falling down the sides sides of a couloir being the main, also risk of injury if you slipped etc. If you throw avalanche danger into the mix then it gets complicated - you may be safer on the sides (less chance of triggering, maybe be able to avoid the full force, hold on to an anchor, etc.) but again if you took a long fall on the rocky periphery then it may end up worse than a mellow but-slide in sluff down the mid line.
If hiking up the center is going to f@#k up your line coming down, you probably shouldn't be climbing up in the first place. If we made it through the eleventy inch tall suncups of August ice, an ascent path in freshies shouldn't even be noticeable. Also, its likely there are deep spaces between the summer snow-/ice-pack and the sidewalls of Bloody, they're just under or loosely filled in with new snow. Walk over there and you might unknowingly fall off the pack, into the rocky space and twist your shit, then miss the first half the new season...that'd suck balls. Plus Bloody is going to get buried soon enough, and will also melt before that some, those footprints were/are temporary at best.
that's exactly the kind of shit i was talking about. in late spring to mid summer those drop offs can be twenty feet easy. there are lots of other considerations.
1. the sun
a) you may want to avoid it if it's hot
b) you may want to be in it if it's cold
c) you may want to avoid it if it's manky
d) you may want to be in it if it is more consolidated
2. the edge
a) after recent snowfalls there may not be a base near the edge, which can be bad
b) in firm conditions the edge may offer a deeper toe hold
c) the edge is often more variable. at times you may find a shallower pitch elsewhere
d) the edge is often more variable. at times it may offer the easiest pitch.
That's just two variables, and not all the factors that go into just those two. In short, climbing couloirs is hard, and while your overall objective might be to not trash the couloir so you can take aesthetic shots of the descent, that's rarely in your head when deciding where your next step will be.
powdork,
Thank you. I am now a Shimabukuro fan. As 13:25 unrolled for the 9th or 10th time, I started checking the dates against my calendar.
4/12 - a 9-14" Monday on Palisades, nobody there, non-stop trackless; 3/26 - a lovely 5" Friday at the wood; 5/27 - you had a nice BC day, I was still recovering from closing Bachelor with 9 of 12 days skiing on the $99 Spring pass; 4/17 - you slacked, I closed Bear Valley the next day; 3/28 - you hiked, I recovered, back home from the prior 4 days; 4/21 - 12" of blower below the cave. We may have talked; 2/27 - near the end of two weeks of non-stop storm skiing; 4/30 - the storm started warm and hard in the Squaw lot, but the 28th was a sweet 12" off of KT. Totally tracked out by Friday the 30th, when the world showed up. I Knew that at elevation, this storm has to be killer. Why did KW not stay open one more week?; 2/22 - a Sweet Monday to close the set. Intermission day for the storm.
Then went back to the beginning for your dates. There is no way we did not ride a chair together last year.
Thanks again for the pump-up and the reminder of what a superb year it was.
Let it Snow!
looks like a great weekend to get out and wash those cars:
"....a decent snowfall will once again be possible above 8500-9000 feet in the Sierra...."
"Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will..."
i like this part. no love for mount rose from this storm???
MOTORISTS SHOULD KEEP IN MIND THAT HIGHER SIERRA PASSES EXCEPT THE MOUNT ROSE HIGHWAY WILL BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO CLOSURE SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY AND ALTERNATE ROUTES SHOULD BE ANTICIPATED.
They just mean that Mt.Rose highway won't close - as it rarely does. For sure the gnarliest snow driving around during a major storm and that road is open! Gotta love Nevada for that. No chain control goons, a free for all.
Now I am getting excited. I know long term forecast are super weak, but, yum.
