How Much Will You Miss Freeze?

    This info courtesy of Particle:

More than a few people are raising their voices against Time4Media's decision to can Freeze Magazine. While this might not be the most altruistic of causes, Freeze was and is an overall positive force in the growth and rejuvenation of skiing and we back 'em all the way. If you want to get involved, add your name to the email below and send it on to all your jibby pals!:

If you havn't heard Freeze has been shut down, so by forwarding this message and signing the pettition by adding your name to the bottom of the list on this message you can help to enable the re - creation of Freeze magazine. Freeze Magazine has been documenting and contributing to skiing's revolutionary movement since day one. It has helped to rejuvenate the sport of skiing so much, inspiring skiers of all ages and abilities. From the New Canadian Air Force, to Seth Morrison's Alaska lines, Parkasauras, extraordinary competition coverage, and Shane McConkey's crazy Stunt of the Month.

Freeze has been there- documenting and providing the most legit and exciting coverage of the soul, energy, fun, and progression behind the sport, an attribute that magazines like have lacked thus far. The discontinuance of Freeze Magazine would be a sad and devastating loss for the sport. Freeze has been (and still is) a major contributor to the excitement, progress, and success that skiing has endured in recent years.

Please reconsider the continuance of Freeze Magazine...Skiing's Revolution! If you want to help, please type your name below and forward this message to anyone and everyone who has experienced stinky ski boots, and/or have been inspired, entertained, and appreciative of Freeze Magazine's contribution to the sport of skiing! Please include this email address in your forward per 100 names.

I was just checking out Steeze at the grocery store. I bought it and have yet to really dive in. Man I'm gonna miss that mag. There is simply no other mag like it. It gives me a perspective that I can't get anywhere else. There will be a HUGE hole in the magazine spectrum. We need all of our mags!

I totally agree with Str8tline. The December issue of Freeze is great. If you are over 20 maybe the writing isn't for you, but there are always sick photos. Freeze brought skiing back to life, seven years ago everyone was focused on snowboarding, remember when there were no skiers in the park? Freeze isn't for everyone, but our industry needs them.

    !

heh, becker is going to get so much spam now!

I'm extremely bummed that they are gone. They were just starting to like my work. This Dec. issue was quite a change from the past issues interestingly enough. Useful articles, better page layout, and much thicker than most issues of the rag.

Like said above, it is going to leave a huge gap. Hopefully someone steps up and fills that gap again. Oh, and hopefully someone goes and burns down the Transworld media office now. There's gotta be someone pissed off enough at Lumbergh over there enough to do it!

Freeze wasn't the greatest ski mag out there, but it sure kicked the snot out of Ski. It was one of those magazines I could usually find at a Hudson News stand, and was good reading material for bus and train trips in and out of NYC. Also helped pass the time while defacating.

I bet Time is really gonna regret this. The jibber-jizz rag set is just growing in age and purchasing power. Freeze has a market - someone will step up!

I'm pissed, cause not only does skiing lose the only mag that is solely devoted to covering the aspect of our sport that brought skiing out of it's 5 foot deep grave, but Flip McCririck (ex Senior Photo Ed, co-founder of Freeze, and now Senior Photog) had all but guaranteed me a page in the "contender" section. That would've been sweeet.

Anyways, besides my self-absorbed ski-slutting, something desperately needs to fill the huge hole that Freeze's demise will leave.

Freeze needed to go under simply to purge Brad Holmes from the ski industry. Hopefully Marker will go out of business next...

Other than the shitty writing and unoriginal layout, it was great. Chicks, underage drunk kids, and decent photos. I'll miss it, but I'm sure something bigger and better will rise out of the ashes.

Definitely cancel all your Transworld subscriptions if the cancellation of Freeze bothers you, and let them know why you're doing it while you're at it.

    Right now I'm laughing.

Freeze... oh yeah, to bad the Christians at Transworld bought them instead of Larry Flint, we could have had full page spreads of drunken snowboard chicks pissing and articles on on how to buy crack, instead we got Brad. Fuck you Larry, you hate the kids.

Every time there's a shakeup in the magazine side of the industry, my mind wanders to that warm fuzzy office setting in the sky, where someone like Larry Flynt or some other magnanimous kabillionaire decides to fund an artistic coffee table ski mag.

Oh, there have been many a pipedream discussed in hazy basements, where heads mull the move, banging against walls to the Utah house beat playing at the temple down the street; at all nighters in Whistler; in North Shore attics.
Electronic mumblings of a Red Dawn raid on the established diminution dump to keep the soul alive and feed the vicarious verve as existential historians of the sport.

    The competition is formidable.

Pitch the idea to Mr. Wheelchairman, he owns Big Brother and did all the shit I mentioned and more.

writing wasn't always top notch or anything, and brad holmes has seriously been lacking for the past god know how many years, but it's definately a unique mag that has brought a lot to the park aspect of the sport. i just got my december issue today, and just looking it over, i can say that i will feel that the sport will definately be missing a major contributer (what with the open, parkasoreass, etc).

there is going to be a big void to fill once freeze is gone.

Then who are we going to laugh at? That's a market niche that needs to remain filled, isn't it?

So does that mean you're volunteering to fill that niche now?

Hey, somebody's got to do it.

PS - It's 5 minutes to 6 a.m. PST, did you even go to bed?

Jesus, I wish.I now get 3 issues each of Ski and Skiing each month. I don't pay for them, they just come. Last year I was getting two of each and tried to unsubscribe and look what happened! I'm afraid to contact them again.

    100 pages of ads
    10 pages of actual content
made for the self serving short attention span monkies that are todays youth in all their gorillaz steez glory
i would have actually cared for .05 seconds if the lifty chicks were actual lifties, but in actuality they were just shitty ugly models (aka chicks under 5'10" that can't actually make it in the real modeling industry and have to resort to shitty photo shoots for shitty people)

go smoke a bowl in the gondola, you'll feel better that freeze is gone.
just make sure there's no DEA in it.

i for one couldn't give a damn less.

to the petition maker: they axed the magazine because it wasn't making them any money, your "market segment" would rather spend its $10 on weed than a magazine. unless you can single handedly get people to donate a shitton of money, don't waste your time.

Funny, Freeze is the only mag that has never ran one of my pics. The guys that work there, after meeting them at Solfest, left a bad taste in my mouth, in respect to how they treated alll the kids that fucking worshiped them. Yeah its sad to see another mag die, but Im glad it was freeze instead of adecent publication. And yeah they did do a lot for the sport, but they havent done shit lately.

While it seems big to us, because we're so close to it, the jib market is just not large enough to attract the big ad dollars... period.
jibij.com was a labor of love, but I was certain I'd be able to raise enough money to maintain the quality I wanted in both the look and the content. Couldn't do it. Even with traffic numbers higher than I ever predicted, there were no dollars to be found. I'd probably still do it all over again, because it was just that much fun, but the site wound up costing me lots of money and time over the few years it was up.
It looks like the market would have to grow by a factor of 3 or 4 to be taken seriously.
Magazines like Freeze are necessary to grow the market. So, now what? Smaller market means less R&D, less competition, less selection and higher costs for us.
We see vast differences between the jibbers and the powder crowds and may assume that one market doesn't affect the other. I think that's a mistake.

I'm going to miss my free (3) issues of Freeze for buying Yearbook. I hope they finish out the year at least.

Great mag, too bad so sad
