    Taos area around xmas

Looks like I'll be in Santa Fe, Nuevo Mexico for X mas this year with my mom, so I'm eyeing Taos. How is it that time of the year besides crowded? I searched earlier and saw recs of Wolf Creek too. Is it worth the drive? I'll be by my self as my mom doesn't ski, but Taos only looked to be ~1.5 hours from there. Is that estimate bout right? Any other tips would be appreciated as I've never been to the NM before. Gracias in advance.

'Crowded' in Taos = 'Empty' in Summit County

Taos is a bad ass mountain. The question is whether or not snow will cooperate, as it can be feast or famine there. My impeccable timing has resulted in skiing there during famines.

Wolf Creek is definitely worth the drive, the snow is a little more reliable than Taos.

Ski Santa Fe is right near town, I've never been but heard it's crowded. But if it dumps there, why bother driving far?

Taos can definitely be iffy early in the season. A lot of the fun stuff needs a good amount of snow, and you don't want to drive to Taos and find out that The Ridge is closed. Watch the snow report carefully and pray for snow.

Even with so-so conditions, you will still have fun at Taos. You can rip turns in the sun, and it is sunny much of the time. After a day of skiing, stop at Orlando's for some killer, cheap, Mexican food.

Heading up to Wolf Creek is a great idea too.

You won't find big crowds at either place, compared to most resorts in the U.S.

Like everybody on the thread has said, the snow at Taos is unreliable that early in the season... however, the place kicks ass!! and if you get lucky and hit it when the good terrain starts opening up, there's no need to go on to Wolf Creek. I've had a few memorable days there just after school got out mid December.

1.5 hours drive is correct.. and taos is uncrowded compared to the major colorado resorts, but, if there is great snow during that week there will be a lot of people coming from albuquerque, santa fe, etc... but even with a 15-20 minute lift line wait taos is much better than santa fe... but if you ski santa fe there are a couple decent ob routes that come out onto the access road, then you can hitch a ride back to the base. in bounds there was nothing to get excited about the last time i skied there which was in '83.. i suppose there might have been a few changes made since then though
