    Bindings Screwed Too Deep

Here's the situation: the screws for the front part of one of my tele bindings are pushing through to the extend that I can see "dimples" on the base.

Some background: I had this same problem (to as lesser extent) when I first mounted them with alpines almost two years ago. Then it was minor and I caught it almost right away. Brought it back and it got fixed.

The tele re-mount happened last spring. New holes, obviously. I didn't notice anything when I got them back. Skied three days on them, stored 'em, and forgot about them.

Fast-forward to now and I've noticed these dimples. I'm gonna bring 'em back but am wondering what kind of excuses they might give. Skis are in general rough shape - a core shot, sidewall damage etc. Could the original fuck up have contributed to the current one? Could water getting into the ski be a cause? Is the shop who mounted the tele bindings solely responsible and should I give 'em what-for?

    Thanks for any info.

SaAaH (and more and more thinking I should learn about this stuff and do it myself),

Just a guess. Are the skis you are talking about Volants? They are very thin skis. Something similar to this happened to me with a pair of PowerCarves.

Head Monster 75. A pretty kick-ass east coast ski, but suffering a little more wear than I would have hoped.

SaAaH (and need to coax at least one more season out of them),

Not that big of a deal.

Get (you or your shop) a 0.25" thick steel plate approx. 6x3 in and clamp tightly over the dimples. Use a torch or heat gun and heat the plate until hot. The plate spreads the heat and should allow the dimples to retract.

Make sure your screws aren't too long by holding against the sidewall. If they are, they can be ground shorter. A good rule of thumb is a MINIMUM of three threads in the ski. If the screw length is OK, check for debris in the holes. Flip the ski and tap the base firmly if found.

Screw the bindings beck in with a little white glue and you should be OK.

    those dimples are mostly cosmetic

if you didn't notice the problem until you saw them now, they really aren't a problem

OTOH, the shop fucked up, but now that you've destroyed the skis on your own what do you want them to do???

Maybe they will agree to give you a full tune in compensation, but I don't think they'll buy you new skis at this point if your skis are as beater as you say.

Basom's got it pretty much right. Shit-kickin' happened alpine style. Only been teled on three times in much more mellow conditions (cause, you know, you can't ski agressively on teles).

Anyhow, main concern is that as they are now, I can't get a proper tune. I'm not dumb enough to expect anything new out of this - I just want to make sure I'm not out of line if I ask them to cover the costs of repairing this i.e. I want to be sure this is their fault and could not have somehow happened by other means.

edit: oh, and I'm an idiot. Dimples = depressions. Pimples = little bumps. I'm dealing with pimples here.

Yes. The dimples are their fault and they should do something for you.

Our shop would do something for you.

in that case, I'd get some Oxy 10 and a 0.25" thick steel plate approx. 6x3 in. Use a torch or heat gun and heat the plate until hot, then use it to make delicious s'mores. When you're done stuffing your face, spread the Oxy 10 on the affected area, and the pimples will go away in a couple of days.

Just to wrap things up, I brought the skis back to M.E.C. and the guy seemed generally pissed that one of his shop dudes would have done this. His theory is they used regular alpine screws instead of the shorter G3 screws. In any case, he's gonna fix it and tune-em up free of charge. Kudos for taking responsibility.

SaAaH (and off to east some smores),
