    Stupid A-Basin THIEF!

if anyone was at A-Basin today(Sun) you might have heard something about stolen equipment. It was the first day up for my friend, and as we went in for lunch, it didn't even cross my mind to trade skis to deter thieves. I mean, it's the first weekend of the season for crying out loud!! So when we come back from lunch, my friend's brand new Salomon X-Screams are gone. He had only put two runs on them! It really sucks for him. People who steal skis should be shot.

oh yeah, and why was there such a huge crowd on Sunday when there was very little crowd on saturday?

Well, at least they weren't good skis. Hopefully a lesson learned today by your friend. Thieves will always be around no matter what time of year. Early season is prime time for thieves since a lot of people are testing out their new skis.

I had a pair of new K2 KVCs stolen about 12 years ago early season up at Sugarloaf. Luckily I had the serial numbers written down and they ended up in a shop in New Hampshire.

If you catch someone stealing your equipment and say in the heat of anger you tackle him and fuck him up. Would or could you be charged with assault?

    Yes.

As for the theft that really sucks. I had my backpack stolen at Vail a couple years ago. I try not to leave my stuff in the lodge anymore, but I never lock my skis. My secret is to put them next to prettier skis. Or next to the window.

The reason the Basin was more crowded today than Saturday was because Saturday was the day after a Halloween friday night. Second, it was snowing.

That must be Colorado state law because I know in Texas (and other states) if you catch someone screwing with your person or property, you have the right to do whatever you feel necessary to protect your self/property. Helps keep petty crime low.

If you thought and could more or less prove that it was necessary to beat on the dude then you would probably get off. But say the guy was walking off with your rig, saw you, dropped the skis and ran- then it wouldn't be a good idea to go after him.

Pats, baby, PATS! With Miami and the Jets both losing today, a Patsies W would be pretty huge.

    Well, that's Texas for ya

In this case it would probably be a charge of Battery instead of Assault. Battery is when you actually hit or touch someone, and assault is an attemt or offer to touch or hit someone with violent force.

Depends if he/she puts up resistance when you try to take your sheit back. If so, they get pounded and you get off without charges. If they hand your stuff back without resistance and you still whoop thier ass, then they could try to press charges, but what judge in his right mind would not throw that case out???

Back me up Keaton, you are in law school, sound like the scope of the law?

Well I just watched The Practice and as long as you are a Croatian diplomat's son you would have total immunity.

Well, I'm a Croatian and I'm sure I know someone who knows a diplomat. So I'd be ok, right?

Isn't personal property that gets stolen away from the home, still covered by homeowners? I thought I remembered hearing that...

(assuming your buddy owns a home)

And about swapping skis - I have never heard or saw anyone do it before my friends came to visit from NYC; they looked at me funny when I just took off my skis, popped them in the snow and walked away. I mean, I guess I just have too much faith in people...

You arrrre correct(billy madison anyone). I had a pari of xscreams get ripped off about 4 years ago(at least they were xscreams) and I got almost 1000 bucks for them after deductable. And they were a full season old. Mine were even locked, and the insurance company seemed to be much more giving because they were locked.

Yeah, my friend's pretty torn up about it. He's a somewhat agressive skier so I endorsed the buy after he wouldn't consider any Volkls or Dynastars I suggested (I was going to suggest some Fischers too, but I guess sniagrab is above brands like Fischer). They still had factory tune on them. Skiing on factory tune is about the sweetest on-piste skiing he would have had.

He might be able to get insurance money from American Express, but we'll see.

Maybe a person should round up some fishing line and maybe some yellow rope. Build some type of Rube Goldberg machine so that in the end the P.O.S. gets seriously maimed. Stealing skis or bikes no matter what they are should be a hanging offense.
