Great rec! ...but I may have a Mtn man bias.

Some good movie additions this month on Netflix. It's been a long time since I've been able to say that.

'The big short' is a must watch and mandatory re-watch. (Benny probably owns it on blu-Ray)

"Spotlight" is fantastic and in the tradition of "all the presidents men"

Blade 2 is good fun. All three "back to the future" are now available, as are the lethal weapon trilogy.

Lovely bones, and Cinderella man are getting bumped up the que

On the doc front, anybody seen [T] ERROR? I wasn't so impressed with the production itself but it's a pretty remarkable film in that they were able to get footage from both sides of an FBI anti-terror op.

Fuck you Netflix. So I've been in Canada for the past week and a couple of nights ago picked up the tablet after the family had gone to sleep to watch some Netflix. There are all of these great recent movies on there. Interstellar, the new star wars, lots of actual recent releases. Totally better selection than the US on the same account. Of course now that were back its all gone. I need to figure out how to fool Netflix to think I'm still I. Canada.

You notice the same thing as I?

The Movie selection has been VERY THIN the past year or better.
It used to be pretty good, now, Worse than the old HBO of the 90's

Yes! And they just sent notice they are raising my rate. Think I'm about to dump them. Can get by with just Hulu and Amazon Prime, I think.

I just watched Roman Holiday; if you're into olde tyme B&W type stuff, this is one of the better of that era. Sort-of rom-com with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn.

On a completely different note, I noticed that Netflix is streaming Re-Animator. To call that one a cult classic is an understatement. I never quite saw the whole thing, due to a power outage in the theater which occurred at the height of an insane body-hurling scene, very close (by my watch) to the end of the movie. I don't want to spoil it, but there's a rather remarkable, um, head scene, as well.

Regarding old B&W movies, I've been watching a lot of old Akira Kurosawa movies on Hulu. The wife freaked out during the village battle scene in Seven Samurai, and this is a woman who loves zombie shows.

Also getting into Robert Bresson movies.

Seven Samurai is great, and a template for lots of more recent films. I managed to see The A-Team Movie only about a week after watching Seven Samurai, and was struck by the similarities. Similar endings, even:

"We have lost, too; the farmers won, but we have lost."

    "This is bullshit, man!"

Bunch of 80s/90s stuff. Spies Like Us, Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, Big Trouble in Little China. I swear I saw DC Cab on there the other day.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Another Kurosawa movie, Hidden Fortress, was a big influence on Lucas when he made Star Wars.

Just finished watching all 8 episodes of the Netflix created "Stranger Things" in 2 days. Does the early 80's thing very well. Surprised by how much I liked it. Want more.

I did the same thing over the past weekend. It pulled me in pretty quickly. Being in my mid-50's definitely helped.

Thanks for the (T)error rec, jono. "Remarkable" is the right word; pretty amazing that anyone had the balls to film that one, and to be filmed.

Just saw Spotlight, the most recent Best Picture Oscar winner, on Netflix. It's an important story very well told, but as a drama pretty straightforward.

I put in a good word for the series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend in another topic. I've seen more, so I'll say more: Woman-centered musical comedy isn't my favorite genre and it probably isn't yours, but if you like stuff that's original and brilliant, you may want to check it out anyway.

Starts slow, but builds up steam. Not as good as season 1, but worth a watch.
