    Why everyone hates the NBA

So here is a quote from Latrell Sprewell:

The Timberwolves offered him three more years at a paltry $10 million per season, and Spree was deeply offended. "Why would I want to help them win a championship here?" he said. "They're not doing anything for me." (Did we mention that they're paying him $14.6 million?) "I'm only trying to feed my family." (Hey, don't laugh. Milk is up to $3.69 a gallon.)

I agree, they're spoiled. Trying to feed his family? - what an asshole.

I think the NBA is going to make acomeback in the next few years, if they can gettheir collective bargaining agreement worked out before another lockout. The Pistons proved last year that team ball can win championships, and is fun to watch. The trend is continuing this year, look at the Jazz, 4-0 with quality wins over the Lakers and Nuggets twice, once in Denver.

Everyone knows Sprewell is a jackass. A quote like that shouldn't suprise anyone. The guy is a detriment to every team he has played for, and the Timberwolves will be no different. They need to trade him ASAP.

I don't think the Lakers will go .500 this year.

Yea Spreewell is a pure fucker, but it is a buisness where negotiating for contracts is everything. I don't think players should bring that process public like Spree did, but it won't change...it is the nature of the buisness.

I thought everyone hated the NBA because the league started marketing individual players rather than teams, leading to an incredibly boring one-on-one game with eight extra players on the court.
So I got that goin' for me...which is nice.

that is fucked up man. These people are simply getting paid what they are worth. Do you think that they should get minimum wadge and the owners and TV should reap everything?

I take it you work in the U.S. news media industry, plenty of motherfuckers in that field. You need to look in the mirror...who pays you bills? News media is helping to bring this country down. The NBA is a lot better people that the news media, you guys cant even do your job, the news gets all slanted to the right or left, we have to go to international news to actually see what is going on from a netrual standpoint...the NBA does thier job, they entertain billions. How is that hurting you?

Yeah, it sucks, I miss it.

As far as players getting paid, they should get as much as they can, just like anybody else. I just think the pro game itself sucks, I find college hoops way more entertaining.

FWIW - Sprewell won ESPN Radio's "Just Shut Up!" Award this week.

$14.6M and the words "trying to feed my family" don't belong in the same sentence. Asswipe.

It is possible that Sprewell has up to 100 illegitimate children to support.

Basketball sucks, bottom line. If you guys miss the NHL this year, check this out.

They're using NHL 2005 to simulate the whole season, it's pretty sweet.

What they're "worth?" To whom? Me? You? The owners? If you haven't noticed with this whole Hockey thing, the fact that player's salaries are unjustifiable is hurting pro sports. Besides, it's a FUCKING GAME. $1,000,000 a year should be sufficient to work for 48 minutes 80 some days a year, dontchathink?

The NBA's minimum salary this season is $385,277. Should he earn more than that? Yes, since he's a perennial all-star. The owners do not make as much as you think, their money making ventures are something other than the franchise. BTW - "Television" actually loses money on professional sports in the US. Trust me, this is a little known FACT. They pay the exorbitant TV rights to try to attract viewers to their other, cheaper programming. That's why you're inundated with promos to that network's other shows during a game.

Whoah. Allow me to answer this last rant in list form:

    1. No, I work in the International Media
    2. No more than any other field.
    3. I look in the mirror every time I comb my hair or trim my nostrils hairs.
    4. My employer - Reuters News Agency
    5. The News media is NOT bringing this contry down, uninformed idiots who parrot soundbites as fact are.
    6. If a group of under- or un-educated professional athletes are "better people" than journalists (without whom our democracy would be in serious jeopardy, which is why the FIRST Amendment covers what we do for a living) in your opinion then I grieve for the other stoned illiterates out there who may agree with you. To clarify my position - neither Rush Limbaugh NOR Jon Stewart are journalists. They're entertainers.
    7. If you're worried about "slanted news" just watch two shows - one to the right (like FNC), one to the left (like CNN), and the truth is what they have in common... "X happened in Y location to Z..." usually. Otherwise I would recommend just what you lament: an International News Agency such as mine or the AP. We sell to both, so by your very definition we have to actually be fair & accurate or lose ALL our clients. BTW - I'm talking about NEWS, not shit like the O'Reilly Factor or Larry King.
    8. The NBA's "Job" is to entertain. They do it moderately well, but as others in this thread have opined, the Amateurs (College Hoops) do it (entertain) better. Be that as it may, by no means is there a justification for Latrell Sprewell to take offense to "only" making $10M a year in salary for playing a fucking GAME. I have a great job - so does my wife. We are by no means needy, and can afford to spend money on frivolous things like skiing and cars that are more than mere transportation.

We would have to work for 100 years to equal ONE year's worth of the current salary of Mr. Spewell. I do think that we earn our wage more than he does.

We'll continue this discussion when you're out of school and in the real world hoping to God that you don't get canned or injured so that you can pay your mortgage/rent, feed & clothe your family, afford to drive a vehicle, and maybe... just maybe... be able to in some way pursue the sport which brings us all together here. I guess you won't be doing it as a journalist.

    I'm done.

YEa sorry tippster, but you shouldnt make assumptions about me and what I do for a living, just as I shouldnt have dont twards you..although I knew it was some type of news/upper-level poparatzi thing you had going on.

Hate the system not the player. The market dictates what anyone gets paid. Unless you never bitch about anything work related, shut the fuck up, live with it and stop your whining.

I think this thread sucks, just like the NBA, but I'm not a fan of watching basketball at any level. I'm sure there are stats somewhere on this, but it seems basketball players have more run-ins with the law than most other sports. Or at least that's the impression I get from watching the news.

I still like the NBA. I don't care what y'all say, I'm gonna watch GP and Paul Pierce lead the Celtics to 43 wins and a first round playoff loss and enjoy it. After the C's lose I'll be jumping on the AK47 bandwagon and rooting for the Jazz (got any room left on the bandwagon Woodsy?).

Tip: pro sports franchises are status items. There are few enough of them and enough obscenely rich people (and more every day), that the prices for the teams keep going up. If you sell a team for 2x what you payed after 8-10 years of ownership it doesn't matter if you had operating losses on a yearly basis since you can write those off against your other business expenses anyways. The only way the system breaks down is if the sport loses its cache and there is no next sucker to pay $600 million for your team (hello NHL!)

As for more run-ins with the law, compare the number of arrests in the NBA with the U.S. congress, then run a regression analysis for income and race - you'll be pleasantly surprised or dissapointed (depending on who you're a fan of)
