    Cool Videos Found on Vimeo

This is so cool, and I don't have any idea how this dude got the camera to move like that. Cropping, or does he actually stand there and move the camera all day long......?

I'm guessing a jib connected to an electric motor on the same kind of timer used to track stars.

I didn't see anything that looked like a jib shot but there's definitely a motorized pan/tilt head and a step motor dolly.

I've got a telescope head that you can program to creep that works pretty well for that kind of stuff.

Second video had a vertical jib move. You can "pan" with a jib as well and it gives the impression of "walking" around an object since the head can pan in the reverse direction of the arm's movement.

Otherwise most of those are dolly shots - both using as Kidwoo and I both surmise an incremental motor that paces the movement exactly with the time lapse. There are other instances where there's a slow zoom incorporated in the timelapse - this is the same principle but moving the camera.

I think that's just a tilt. I've got a jib crane I've been using for a couple of years. If that's a crane, it's not a very long one.

Gunnit: check this out. This is what I use. As long as you're not using long exposures on an SLR, or just using a video camera, it works pretty well.

True - could simply be a ped up. All guesswork on our parts, tho.

That's cool. I'm going to have to try this out.

But, it does seem like if you had a wide angle lens you could just do a crop and add movement to the clip. Especially if you shot in 1080 and then use a 720 timeline.

It still never looks as good as a true pan.

But yeah, you can also do that.

Talk of dolly systems made me think of Khalid Mohtaseb's video that came out right after the Haiti earthquake. This is shot with a 5DII and a Kessler Pocket Dolly.

Hadn't seen that new little trailer yet. Good stuff.

Fun fact: I went to high school with the guy who built Tom's motion control stuff for this project.
