Thumbs up Maggots!!! I need your help and more importantly the Avie forecasters do too!!!

Yep, that is right, I was just assigned a project for work that you all can help me with immensly.

    From another thread:

The Bear River Avalanche Information Center is having it's annual fundraiser in Logan. Here's the scoop:

Friends of the Logan Avalanche Center
    Fundraiser 2004

    Date: December 4th, 2004 from 6-10 pm
Location: Bridgerland Park Center (920 N 200 W, Logan), Private Party Rental
    Estimated Attendance: 75-100 persons (Price….approx. $20/person)
Event happenings: Dinner provided by Indian Oven
    Raffle of Donated Items
Music provided by local band (not yet decided)
    Beer and alternative beverages available
Potential Info booths?: Cache County Search and Rescue, USU ORC

Theme: “Pray for Snow” Revival, Revelry, and Raising (funds, that is!)
    THIS MIGHT CHANGE

    Event explanation:

The mission of the U.S. Forest Service Utah Avalanche Forecast Center- Logan is to promote avalanche awareness and provide relevant avalanche information for wintertime backcountry travelers who frequent the Northern Utah Mountains. There is one paid full-time, seasonal forecaster for the Logan area who is tasked with providing avalanche awareness programs to the community and regularly releasing morning avalanche and mountain weather advisories.
It is the goal of FLAC to raise funds for supporting the avalanche forecast program. The funds are used to pay for part-time observers, educational outreach, weather instrumentation, equipment, and other pertinent items not provided by the USFS. The Logan community is comprised of both non-motorized and motorized backcountry users. The avalanche forecast program serves both of these groups.

If anyone has anything to donate, any ideas for getting stuff for the raffle, etc., please let me know, or let the center know directly. So far, PM GEAR is donating gear, Gordy Peifer is donating some of his personal gear, and perhaps a couple of other ski/film companies which you may be familiar with (in addition to other, local sponsors). If you have ideas and/ or hookups, please share!

I showed this to our CEO and our company is looking into this event and farther beyond, the big picture.

I can use the help of writers, proposal specialists, snow science peeps, any and all maggots that have a large knowledge of snow science and avies too.

    Xposted:

I was just ASSIGNED ( ) to come to the board and do research on snow science and the possibility of our company getting involved with not only this event but the use of our products to help Avalanche Forecasters with data collection to help keep our asses alive.

I have to submit a proposal to donate a used Allegro Field Computer. I could use any of your help in this proposal. I need very good, well written reasons we should donate on such a large basis. (there may be a market for our handheld in this market, I have to prove that).

To see what I am speaking of, check out our website at www.junipersys.com and if you can, help me write this proposal. Hints, tips, gun to heads,........

I am also to set up a meeting with myself, Toby Weed, our CEO and Ignacio Birkner, our controller and 84 Olympic Skier for Argentina. We want to asses what types of data are taken and what the NEEDS of the Avalanche Forecast is looking for.

Help me out guys, Toby and others can use our help!!!

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but around these parts, Doug Scott is your man for GIS snow slidey type stuff. If you need to get a hold of him let me know.

    Buzz,

Your product is perfect for this type of application. You could map and enter all kinds of data regarding avie's, including location, width, deposition pile, triger layers, crystal type, snowpit locations, testing locations, etc. The wave of gathering data in the field (like I need to tell this to you) is through handhelds. I have used a recreational GPS unit to mark locations of test pits, climbing routes, descents, etc. It would be cool if the forecasters could upload the info from the field and create an avie report in real time. The hand held sure would be an improvement over pencil and paper. Definetely atime saver, once you learn how to use it. If you incorporated it into GIS, you could easily do some trend analysis that would make it easier to predict and forecast avies. It also puts alot of the testing and forecasting into a user friendly setting. A lot of forecasters keep trends and other info in their head, the kind of info that is not easily recorded for others to use. A hand held would make it easier to record that type of information (like the Monitors on the PC ridge line sliding like clock work whenever the wind is out of the southwest)

Contact the University of Utah geography dept. There was a student working on her PHD (I think her name is Phoebe) that has done a ton of work with remote sensing, snow science, etc.

Toby is a good guy. I was a volunteer patroller at PC when he was the head of snow safety.

    Post

Names, phone numbers, email addys, where they are working, all that jazzzzzz will help.

Please PM or email. In profile for addy.

I want to have our company donate a refurbished Allegro. I need help with a proposal that shows EXACTLY why they would need it, HOW they would use it and more. Cololi, can I use the info you posted as part of the proposal.

I need to know what kind of data they take (as complete as possible). I have to set up a meeting with Toby, but want to have a damn good head start to really sell this to my sales bosses. My CEO is sold, but I have nothing without the backing of my boss and the VP of Sales.

I will be working on this proposal over the next few weeks, or less. Have a trade show, we are moving to our newly built building next week, lots of stuff happening.

I would love to set up a document as well showing all the support from maggots responses here and compile them. This will help in more ways than I have time to type.

I have already recieved a PM from a well respected BC traveller outside Utah who happens to be a student as well. Please pass this info along to your professors if you are a student and have them contact me if needed.

For my work eaddy and phone number, please PM me.

Thanks for your support and help. You have the opportunity to help me make your lives a bit safer doing what you love to do with the resources and backing I am getting. Very cool.

I just sent you a pm with some contact info. I've wondered for several years why froecasters don't use this technology more ( well, I know why: funding).

Would "Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain" give you some ammo? While reading it, I know my brain started thinking of ways to enter and trend the information gathered using a handheld.

    Do tell.

The more info I can get from you all, the better this all will go and eventually the technology coupled with avie forecasting may save your life or lives of friends and loved ones.

I will do my work here, but would really like to get the goods from you all, as I am a BC jong.

This is a work in progress, please feel free to post whatever comes to mind that you feel may help.

MT Man, Foggy and cololi, got the PM's, printed and copied and pasted to a running list of uses........

    Buzzworthy,

Crosspost your query over to the Telemarktips Avy board

    http://www.telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=5

    - there are enough obsessive-compulsive technogeek avy science enthusiasts and avy pros there to potentially give you good feedback on what might eventually be an excellent data-gathering/forecasting tool.

Also, when I see her again, I'll ask a friend of mine who's trying to put together a field-usable avy modeling algorithm here at the U (as part of her doctoral dissertation) to check out the Juniper, and see whether she has any insight.

Can a snowboarder/trying to be skier again get on there without 2 months of Jonging?

I will get on their this weekend and register.

Holy cow, you guys are great, tons of PM's.

Help!!! I would like to save a lot of this stuff and am copying and pasting into word. Can you now email me any info at buzzron@gmail.com at this point?

So far, this WHOLE adventure into this market is looking good.

STILL NEED HELP ON A PROPOSAL TO GET JUNIPER SYSTEMS TO DONATE AN ALLEGRO TO TOBY!!!! Writers and debaters needed!!!

2P, that the book you just got and was raving about? I may take you up on your offer. If this continues to go well, as it is so far with all the info, I can probably get the company to buy that book for me.

    I will let you know.

Kick ass project, I love it.

(I have the board open 3 times, on on the board and two on PM's, that is how good you guys are, holy cow keeping me busy!! )

    Ideas, Ideas!!

Just got off the phone with Toby and may be meeting with Bruce Temper as well, Toby would like him to come to our meeting to discuss the needs and wants of the "Avalanche Forecaster".

If you were one, what would you look for to take the data you need as effieciently as possible.

    My spelling sucks today.

    Thumbs up Oh Yeah!!

    Yeah Baby!!!

CEO just called me said I will be taking a few big wigs (from I can't say where company) with him to Snowbasin or Snowbird (I vote Basin) in January and February for an on mountain meeting(s). This may happen a few times this season!!! Will be packing our Allegro CX and GPS setup and digging pits, ......., showing the differences of PNW snow to our Utah Powpow. CEO said my main objective is to sell them on the Allegro (private firm) and play tour guide.

Skiing or boarding on the company!!! Gotta say better than golf meetings.
