I'd just like to say thank you to the members of this board for being such a source of inspiration to me.I believe in my abilities as a writer, but realise that I am so much more prolific, focused & pertinent by interacting with the members of this board.I've only met a dozen of so members in person,& skied with a handful, but my brief association with you has been lasting & very beneficial.
Before I started posting here, my zeal for skiing had been slowly isolating me from the world that I knew. The drought had pushed me away from my version of "Cheers" at A-basin.My friends there doggedly refused to ski anywhere else.People didn't have the money, time or desire to go to Utah or Jackson. One by one ,my other friend's priorities changed:they lost their passion or physical well being, gave up the ghost for the corporate life, or were emasculated by their wives & girlfriends that didn't share their love of skiing. As for women, Hell..,it was hard to even find friends to go skiing with, much less a girlfiriend. My altimeter watch had become my ski partner. To quote one of my biggest influences,Hunter S. Thompson,
"As the age of Nixon wore on ,it became harder & harder to find those willing to sign on for the whole tour."
So I started to lead a dual life;my skiing life & my interaction with the world life.Any woman that I hooked up would freak out after 6 weeks or so about my love affair with my mistress ,skiing. The gauntlet of an ultimatum would be thrown down,& I'd find myself on my way with my best friend & lover, skiing.
That succinctly describes my postion pre-board.
I believe that being a part of this forum contributed to my getting an online column at Altacam.com,& will continue to be a positive influence on my life. When I joined the board,Karl Stall imparted some words of wisdom, that have held true.
" Be prepared to jettison your old life & friends & replace them with new friends and a better life." Thanks Rock!
That being said, sometimes I get a little discouraged by the bellicose nature of some of the members.I'm here to exchange views & form bonds with people who share similar values;not to force my opinions on others or provoke flame-outs.The election was particularly hard on me & desire to lash out at those that like to bait was powerful.Part of the process is knowing that I won't always agree with others,& to withold my omnipotent urge to want to throttle the sh*t out of those select few who seem to thrive on discord. The Yin-Yang model of the universe that I hold to be self evident states that good things always bring bad things with them & vice-versa.I hope in the future we can all excede our expectations on contolling our desires to pontificate about our non-skiing POV's.
I look forward to a great season, meeting more Mag's & forging more & stronger bonds with you at the summits. May we all imbibe from the cup of life filled with our beverages of choice.Ciao,
Scott
