    Boat Rod Holders

After looking at several options both purchased and home made I finally settled on the home made variety.
So last night, with the assistance of a 6er of Sierra Nevada I installed me some rod holders in the yacht.

    Looks NICE!

Specifically, what kind pipe did you use? I have a double rod holder I built for my raft out of standard 2" PVC. I have some ideas for modifications for improvement, but it would require me starting over from scratch. I want something a bit more flexible than PVC that can follow the bow line of the raft, just like you did with your boat.

    Any thoughts?

IGB, I looked all over for something more flexible than PVC, but finally settled on PVC. I actually heated it with a butane torch and bent it to fit. It was a little time consuming since you have to heat it pretty slow, I know there is some electrical conduit out there that is more flexible that could work.

Heating it! Yes! Never even thought of doing so.

I'm going to go home this evening and give it a try. I'll post up results.

    Thanks!!

Cool, I will be interested in hearing what your experience is, I found it worked better to pout the approximate bend into it and then start heating it up. Like I said its a pretty slow process, but I liked the results.

SFB, I totally would have borrowed one of your heat guns, would have saved me some blistered pvc tubing thats for sure.
I am getting more and more healed every day. Let me check with the co owner of my house and see what plans may have been made for Memorial Day weekend, but initially I like the thoughts of a camping float a lot!

Didn't get big pine, but, I have bootleg camp reserved for Fri night. Probably float down to Bridge hollow for Sat night unless i can get pugs, red creek or treetops.

Call an electrical wholesale place. Grainger will have it, but it will be too much $$.

What you are looking for is called Liquidtight- it is UV stabilized- rated for direct burial, and really flexible. My company sells grey and black up to 2" . The black stuff can be tied into a pretzel and retain it's diameter. The grey is more rigid, but much less than PVC.

Warthog, I should have got a hold of you!!! I KNEW there was a conduit that would do the job, but I couldnt find it and just said screw it and went with the PVC. Oh well maybe the next person can utilize it.

Warthog - GREAT suggestion. Went fishing yesterday instead of going to the hardware store and getting supplies for a new holder. I'm gonna give the liquidtight a try.

Good luck. The PVC will be a lot cheaper, but this stuff will be as simple as making a cut and attaching. Carflex is another brand that is available. Call Graybar, Rexel, CED, Grainger, or Wesco- those are the national guys in Electrical Distribution. You might have a local guy too.

bringing back an old post, just purchased a boat for myself.

teleee, those holes that the PVC goes into, did those exist already or did you take hole saw to the boat?

Like I said earlier congratulations and welcome to my addiction! I used a hole saw to cut the holes in for the rod holders.

i'd really consider lining the insides w/ felt or sumthin soft if i redid mine
i don't like to drive w/ mine in as the rubbing seems to scuff the ferrule/guide wraps
i'll try n grab that 2 hander from u 2nite let me know ifin you wanna borrow a flameless heater or other ttools
