TR: Mammoth + Sierra BC = epic end of October

Wow, with the best October skiing I have ever experienced now done, I figured I needed to share it with all those not so fortunate to have got sum.

Last weekend was awesome. Great skiing with all the various Mammy maggots. Thursday started at 2:45AM with the "short" drive up to Mammoth. Arrived at the lifts suited up for the 8:30 start and got a few runs up top before joining Bullet and Ted. The skiing was soft fluff that had been sculpted by the Mammoth powder maker (howling wind) Bullets report does a better job than anything I could write, but it was a damn good day! Lap after lap in the noids with it staying nice and soft.

Friday met up with CS, Barnballs, Ted, and Bullet for a great day ripping around Mammoth with a great crew! With the Ted/Bullet photoslutting in full effect (where are the picts!!!!) we scored more wind sculpted softness! The highlight of the day was a hike out to the Hemlocks where it was deeeep, soft, and oh so light. It was knee to above knee deep and very light out there! CS, unfortunately forgot to close his zipper combined with first day of the year pow skiing headplants resulted in a lost camera. Yet another early season pow day!!!

Saturday saw CS, Mts. Comish and a few friends bombing crud on the top to fast groomers on the bottom. Another bluebird beautiful day, but the pow was gone.

Sunday saw CS, Mrs. Comish, and I wandering around the Sierra Crest touring for more pow. We had low expectations as we had heard that the snow was all either wet glop or crusty from the past couple bluebird days. It was great to be out skinning in the backcountry again and with another bluebird day everyone was enjoying themselves regardless of the skiing. The bonus was the discovery of a north facing bowl holding some very good pow!!! The result was two short, but realllly good pow runs on soft boot top pow. CS was truly stoked by the first run. I hadn't seen so much emotion from him in our few days of skiing Mammoth! Definitely a great couple of runs.

Unfortunately our ski out was marred by my biggest crash in years. We come to a large cliff section and CS says it looks "sporty". Basically it was a 15 foot sideslip or straightline down to the treed valley floor below. CS shoots it and I hear him hit the crappy crusty snow as he shoots left to avoid the trees. I take off and my weight must have been a bit forward and the second I hit the crust my tip dives to send me into a full superman heading straight for CS and the tree behind him. I end up in the tree well inches to the side of the tree and a startled CS. Luckily everything was where it was supposed to be with only a bruised hand and slightly tweaked knee which both will be fine.

Final Oct tally from LaLa land is 7 days skied with 5 of those being Pow!!! Great to ski with Bullet, Ted, and CS again, and to finally hook up with Barnballs on the mtn! Bullet, get your new skis yet??? He got jealous of my Sugar Daddy's so had to get something even bigger!! Look out Mammy, be afraid, very afraid. What an amazing early season surprise. Stoked for much more fun with the Mammoth crew this winter!

Here are basic digi picts. There should be a lot more from this weekend eventually!

Yup.... more of that terrible Sierra Cement!

Is CS still using those jacked up poles? We would have made fun of him last spring when he was skiing around with them, except he ripped hard enough to shut us all up...

    Cool pics, cool TR!

Nice man, I was just about to PM you asking about the pics you took. The slides should be done by the end of the week and I'll get 'em scanned soon after.

I'd love to take the time and post some sweet pics of ridgetop winds and huge windbuff power turns but that might have to wait until summer when I can go back and try to find my camera in Hemlock bowl. The only downer on an otherwise ass kicking weekend.

Hard to describe the sweetness of Mammoth windblown. No, it's not the fluff of Utah, but there's somthing to be said about freight train DH turns kicking up huge plums of snow. Since 23 was closed on Friday, we got 2 laps in Dropout without even seeing anybody else over there. Then we just moved over to the Wipeouts and feasted on similar schwank. So much fun, catching a little air of a rock then just arching huge turns down the apron.

Uber, yeah, those are the same poles. I figure until they break, they're donig just fine. Oh, and that pic was taken on lap 2, which was heavier that lap 1, which was basically a small slice of heaven.

Was sweet skiing with the Mags again. Bullet is gonna be scary fast when he jumps on the Bigs, Barnballs is fast becoming a maniacal hucker, and when comish isn't trying to take out the photog (thank goodness I moved about 5 feet forward from my original position) he's [xover]ripping the chit outta it[/xover]

Friday was real fun. (minus the hike OUT of Hemmy).

Thanks for the photos and laughs - "my skis are too big for this lift!" .

The Mrs. Teledaddy's are w/o binders at the moment. The Comish household has come into an abrupt shortage of binders at the moment, ski swap here i come.

Ya, sorta forgot about the gaper move where I couldn't get my skis into the gondi. Only down side to fat skis is they don't fricken fit anywhere... Definitely humorous and would have been great on video.

I think this has to be a "feature" of the gondi. I had my new fat skis this weekend and I put them in the snowboard slot. One time the lift op took them from and managed to get them into the ski slots. When I got to the top, they had to stop the gondi because the ass had wedged them in so tight we couldn't get them out! I wasn't the happiest camper.... You would think they could "upgrade" the gondi considering there are A LOT more people on fatties now...
