the thicker the base, the less chance of cold nights causing depth hoar.

Buuuuutttt... You guys got a large load of snow on a relatively warm ground, eh?
That warm ground would/will cause that the snowpack will be "eaten" from the underside.
It can easily happen that you get a hollow space between the ground and snowpack.

And that means that when the pack is stressed enough, the release runs to the bottom?

spam, the snow fell warm and wet. close to the temp of the ground. it is not like when we get the light cold stuff first and then it quits snowing. i haven't seen any tg at elevation yet (except around cliffs as usual). i am hoping for the best, but will keep checking it out.
