Not supposed to be a political thread, but I guess that's hard to avoid when talking about this person. Anyway, we went and saw him speak last night at a small college near here. It was pretty cool. We got there early, so we had 3rd row seats. The funniest part of the night had to be the Bush supporters. There were protesters at the entrance and a whole slew of them came in for the speech.
There are a couple things that baffled me about the protesters. First, what's the point? Is there a more liberal congingent in the country than a large group of people going to see Michael Moore? Second, what's the fucking point?! There were at least 30 of them in the auditorium chanting and waving signs. At 5 bucks a pop, that's $150 they've spent collectively to support Moore, for no real reason but to be singled out and made fun of by the man himself. That, by the way, might have been the highlight of the evening. They were asked to leave if they didn't stop chanting while he spoke, so a bunch of them left. As they were walking out the door, Moore held up a stack of papers and said that he had a bunch of enlistment forms for them if they were interested...none of the were. A bunch of them stayed, but they puttered out pretty quickly. I guess you can only scream and yell for so long. This is another thing that baffles me. They were screaming at Kerry supporters, flipping them off and getting extremely agressive. Is this what protesting in this country has come to? Wasting everybodies time just so you can get angry and try to start fights with people?
I'll spare you the details of the speech, but I wanted to mention the Christian Coalition that also showed up. As soon as he started they stood up, held hands and started saying the lord's prayer. He just said it along with them, completely taking their fire. They stood up and walked out...very interesting. Not sure what their message or point was.
Anyway, I don't agree with everything he says or does, but I really enjoyed this event. I guess it helps to be surrounded by like-minded people, listening to like-minded speakers. It gives you a sense that we're not totally fucked.
