    MTB Freehub Q's

Problems with my freehub; the ratcheting mechanism starts skipping/breaking free when accelerating. I've had it replaced a couple times but recurs after about 20 hours of wear.

Rear Hub: Formula 6061 - only indicators on the hub, no model ID, it's what came stock on the '08 Marin Alpine Trail 29er.

    My questions:

Are freehubs universal or dedicated to a particular rear hub?

Can I replace it with a stronger/higher end freehub?

or do I buy a high-end rear hub? if so, are the freehub parts more durable?

What would you recommend would be a strong rear hub/freehub that would take the torque of a 220lbs rider?

Thanks for any info, I'm lost???

Freehub bodies are not universal. Formula hubs are generally considered pretty entry-level, so I think this might be an excuse to build up a new rear wheel with a high-end hub. Or you can buy a complete new rear wheel and save the trouble (and cost) of having one custom-built.

As far as high-end hubs go, the top picks are Chris King, DT Swiss, Industry 9, and Hope. Shimano also makes fantastic hubs, but they cost a bit less and lack the "bling" factor of these other brands.

If you want to buy a complete wheel, any Easton or Mavic offering will suit your needs just fine.

dexterq20 is correct. I'd look at just getting a new wheel. If you want something inexpensive, but more reliable than your current wheel, you could pick up a Deore/WTB Speed disc for $120 or less at any shop.

I concur, DITCH this wheel, don't throw good money after bad.
Plenty of deals abound right now.
