Though the "one camera, one movie" idea sounds cool, I think that it might miss quite a bit of the Mag lifestyle, for those of us for various reasons aren't going to be able to make the summits. I'm probably going to be getting and Elura or something of that miniDV sort at somepoint this year, and would love to contribute footy. I also have a Hi8/other vhs tape -> Digital conversion hardware available and the digi editing sftware (finalcut) but doubt I'll have access to that over the summer. AMAZING IDEA. FKNA the maggots go on

SICK idea! I like it! I guess it's a bit selfish, but get it to one of the Boston maggots for the Red Sox parade on Saturday!!! not skiing-related I guess....but whatever, screw you guys! Seriously though this is a really cool idea Lane. I'd love to do some filming etc for the upcoming season at Mammoth and Tahoe and whatnot.

This definitely sounds like alot of skiing/drinking/partying/beautiful images/fucked up weird stuff/babes/stokage/window in the bizzah life of a ski freak and I want in!!!

How long does the battery last? Is there more than one battery?
    thats new hampshire as fuck

Thanks to everyone for sharing the stoke of this idea.

To answer Vinz's question - there's currently only a spare AA battery pack, that takes 6 AAs. I lost the NiCad battery somewhere along the way, so I'm either going to buy one in Truckee at Radio Shack (if I can), or order one online tomorrow. But until then, there's basically limitless power if the person carrying the camera is willing to schlep extra AAs. Before I send it off to anyone, I'll make sure there is at least one rechargable battery in the kit. If I need to get it to someone ASAP early next week (i.e. if Alta is going to open next weekend) then they'll just have to use AAs until I can mail them the battery seperately.

A logbook is a great idea, I have one and I'll include it in the package.

Here's what's up first - I just talked to Alkasquawlik, who is driving up from Santa Cruz to Tahoe right now, and planning on doing some sledding/skiing tomorrow. So I'm gonna meet him somewhere in Truckee tomorrow AM and pass it on to him for the day while I (and lots of others, I might imagine) slave away over our keyboards.

Then it'll go out with us on Saturday at Squallywood to cover the beginning of what we all hope is a long, deep season. After that, I'll take the thing around with me on Saturday night in an attempt to document some of the debauchery that I'm sure will ensue in my pursuit of a good time Saturday night in Squaw and Stateline.

After that, it's in the mail early next week to ____________? Anybody wanna step up for first at bat to get this party started? Any nominees? Let's see how deep the rabbit hole goes.....

EDIT - I got an idea. How about each person who gets the camera is responsible for buying a new tape for it to do their own filming? The tapes are like $4.00 at any grocery store or Long's Drugs. This way, no one would have to worry about taping over someone else's work. So, bascially, I'll send it out first with a blank tape, and then when the next person gets the camera, they have to go buy a new tape. Then before they send it along, they mail their tape back to me. I'll hold on to them until we figure out what the next step is. Even if you buy a 120 minute tape and only use like 40 minutes, no big deal.....

    Thumbs up

Sounds like one hell of a plan Lane, I like it. So are we planning to ship this thing like express mail and try to almost "storm chase" around North America and Europe with it? Or will it just travel around to whomever requests it? Either way it is a sick idea. Hopefully we can shoot some quality footy with it at the Utah Mini, and hopefully showcase the mad backslapping steeze of me and my friend into some deep, deep Ootah pow. [antijinx]

Can't wait to help work on this thing and see the final product.

So I took the camera out to opening day at Squaw, and did a piss-poor job of using it. Got one interview with Alkasquawlik on the lift, and pretty much no actual skiing footage. I'm a lazy cameraman, I'd way rather ski. Which is too bad, but is also why I'm ready to get rid of the camera and get it out to the masses so we can get this project on the road.

Utah looks like the place to be this weekend, if the forecasted Wednesday storm materializes. So, who wants it? Xover? Phunk? Bueller? PM me with your address and I'll get it in the mail ASAP.

I think the "one camera" plan is the way to go. It just makes the whole project more interesting. One other suggestion, Lane. Maybe you can write a quickie one page guide on how to use the camera and this can follow the camera around--or just post it here so whoever gets the camera can start filming without fumbling around.

Update! Elvis has left the building

I just got back from FedEx - the camera is out of my hands now. I shipped it to Evil E for hisbootpacking trip to Silverton this coming weekend.

So to him you should turn with requests for your turn to film your, um, turns.

I'm going to start a calendar thread in the calendar section in an attempt to try and track where/when this thing goes.

    Let the fun begin.

So cool that this is going ahead! While I think it would be cool to have footage submitted by everyone, I think the 'year in the life of the magions' is such a cool angle Can't wait to buy the DVD :P

In case it helps with the movement of the camera...

I'll be headed to LA for two days on Tuesday night Dec 7 (returning on Thursday Dec 9) and could easily pick up from Evil after this weekend and deliver to some Mammoth peeps if they want it.

If not, I'll also be headed to Chicago for work the next Monday Dec 13, and could pass it to any Chicago types for a few days before they head to Utah for the BuzzMini-Summit+str8line camp on the 16th.

And if neither of those two things, then Evil should definitely pass it directly to someone from CO who is headed to the Mini. It should be at the Mini, anyway.

Oh yes, and I'll be in LA again from Dec 20-22rd, so if the Mammy peeps did want it and took it from me this next Tuesday, I could also bring it back to CO after they've had it for a couple weeks.

On the 23rd, my year is over, and I start traveling for fun. Possible Xmas destinations are SW CO, Bend, Ketchum, or SLC. Over new year's, I'll be in Aspen with fam.

Looking ahead a little further, I'm being sent to Seattle in early/mid-Jan (17th), so I could ostensibly transport it from CO to the Seattle crew then as well.

I'm not much of a filmer/slut, but I'll be happy to take the cam between the people that are. Just let me know. It would seem that much FedExing can be avoided...

    Droopy -

Right now it is on it's way to Denver from Truckee in the hands of FedEx, which I had to stoop to using against my wishes because I am lazy and forgot to send it to Evil E sooner. I mean to get it out faster, but the high pressure killed all the good skiiing for the last few weeks.

Cletus - great idea, you will be with E this weekend, no? So you can just take it from him and have it in Mammoth and then deliver it to Altachic (who asked for it at the Utah mini first) later in December...

The more we avoid FedExing, the better. Plus, the hand-to-hand passing enrichens the experiment.

    Thanks for helping!

And big props to Evil E for buying a battery for it, he's gonna be out $40 or so for that contribution. I couldn't find one up here in Tahoe and didn;t have time to get one in Reno.

well, I am working on joining him this weekend, but I don't know for sure yet. But even if not, I can get it from him after the weekend, and take it to LA to give to Mammy people for the week before the mini. Then we'd just need someone from Mammy to be headed to UT for the mini. I'll go check that Mini thread and see if we can find a likely subject.

Vinz, Punani, Yogachick, Comish...all Mammy people that have at some point expressed interest in the Mini.

I get it from Evil, bring it to LA, get it to a Mammoth person, they have it for a week, then one of the above brings it with to Utah for the mini. From there, it can go with whichever mini-attendee looks to be hitting the next big storm.

    Sounds like a plan!

Good idea Splat, and if I can't get it back for whatever reason, I'll just borrow a digi cam from someone here and come down and do an interview and check you guys' shop out. Should have planned ahead for this one, but I'll sneak it in anyway.

Yoss, I'll get it from you, take it to Mammy on the 10th (and shoot), then give it to whoever is going to the Mini (if I don't go, which is still a possibility).

I've already requested the camera for SIA, but I'll do it again. SIA is Jan24-27th...

....but how about then to the Snowbird IFSA comp February 4-6th where whoever wants it can have it, and then straight to the Jackson summit on the 7th?

If it can find it's way to PNH in April, I can shoot some heli goodness. But there won't really be any other magions about that I know of.

I nominate Owens' Kings and Corn as the last stop before the season is done.

I'll put it on the calendar. And I'll be in town for that over the weekend at the end of it. Drais at 4am anyone???

Good idea about Snowbird, just have to work it out with whomever has it at the time.

And about PNH - I'd love it if you had the camera then if you could interview Quinner and Tal and Schafe and the rest of the boys there, I forgot to do it while I still had the camera.

    Question

Is the camera making it to Utah for the mini? That's Dec. 14-20th.
