Like some others have mentioned, I too have my own Hi8 and was already planning on doing some filming. Maybe we can add to the equation by also mailing a Hi8 tape around to those who have Hi8 cameras of their own, and the traveling camera can go to those who don't. Then they can meet somewhare at the end.

I've got a cool directors chair and one of those cards they slam together and yell "action". I've also got a teleprompter in case anybody forgets their lines.

    JH summit

The last time I was in Jackson, the mind was strong but the body weak. So this time when the muscles feel like there ripping off the bone , I'll get my digital 8mm out so I can add to the tom-foolery footage.

Fucking right, thats a great idea. I think the way to do it is for everyone to send in their own tapes at the end of the season with all their best clips, as it has been suggested the most time consuming part is getting the clips ready. Oh and an EC mini would be great just for the fuck of it.

I'm happy to be involved in any way I can... this includes the rough editing and parring down of hours of footage... I don't do anything but work, watch baseball, and drink beer during my summers anyway. The key is going to be getting the Hi8 footy digitized. If we can get the raw footage burned to a few DVDs we can run from there.

It's really a cool concept and I love the idea of submitting it to Banff.

Edit: My fiance just reminded me I'm getting married this summer and will be going on a honeymoon... my involvement may be limited to before June.

im happy to shoot.. but never really know where im ending up. more likely ill try and contribute footage from someone elses camera.

however, i have the facilities to digitize and would be VERY interested in editing!

Actually, sorry to disappoint, but Hi8 is video tape, you must be thinking of Super 8mm film. I wish I had a film camera to pass around, except then no one would know how to use the damn thing, and it would cost thousands of dollars to develop all the film.

I'm buying a six pack of tapes and a battery tomorrow. I say the best way to do this is to worry about the end part at the end - let's get the camera out there and in people's hands to shoot some footage and see what happens - all we have to lose is....well, nothing.

Who does everyone nominate to get the camera first (who's got the best snow right now that if I get it to you by the end of next week, you can shoot something say next weekend?)

Looks like we'll be dry here in Tahoe for a while...I seem to think that it needs to be at Alta for opening day, whenever that may be. We should definately make sure that frozenwater or someone else who took part in organizing the event has it for the Summit in JH. Open to ideas, though. Plus, the more this thing gets around the world, the better. Flingle/Tom definately need to get it, and I really want to see what skiing in Montreal is like (Gincognito??).

We can work out the details later, but I think that for now I'll slow-pitch some ***proposed*** "rules":

    1. Do not talk about Fight Club.
    2. Try to only have the camera one week (two weekends?) before passing it on
    3. Postage is paid by the person mailing it
    4. Try to keep the kit together (camera, bag, charger/AC cord, NiCad battery, AA battery pack attachment - I'll come up with a solid case and mailing box for it all)
    5. R rated is somewhat ok within the realm of judgement for a SKI FILM, but NC-17 is NOT ok, unless you are using puppets)
    6. Try to keep your footage on the tape to less than 40 (?) minutes unless you and your crew are a)hilarious, or b) absolutely killing it
    7. I'll include a form for who has it in which order so we can keep things straight in the end (i.e. #1=Lane Meyer, Squaw Valley, October 30th 2004, Alkasquawlik hucking Burly Shirley, blah blah blah, #2 - Evil E and Yossarian, Berthoud Pass, November 6th, and so on). This should stay with the camera.
    8. Finished tapes should be mailed to me in Truckee (PM me for the address), and I'll keep them until we figure out what to do with all of the footage.

So off the top of our collective heads, what are some crucial events that maggots/minions are part of? Comps at Kirkwood/Snowbird/Crested Butte? Summits and Minis? Anything else? Maybe we could hammer out a rough schedule to adhere to....or maybe it would be better to just lket chaos reign.

(disclaimer - I just participated heavily in the consumption of a bottle of 1993 Dom Perignon prior to the conclusion of tonight's World Series, so I'm not quite at the apex of my brainstorming potential...)

Yup, great idea and as others have said it was batted around on powmag for at least a month or two a couple years ago, never happened. I believe phUnk had been elected to edit all the footage.

I will definitely be filming this year, (miniDV) and prolly will cut another home ski movie next summer, but would be happy to donate my best footage to the cause.

It might be easier to do what i think we decided to do last time, which is every region shoot their own footage, at the end of the year select the best clips, put them on one tape and send them to the person who is going to edit the movie. Just a thought.

I will be at whistler for the Snowboard world championship and for the week after, I will be making the hike to the Flute Bowl and checking that out, that could make for some good shots, plus im planning on doing bungee jumping while im up there, and that is for sure worth filming, chances are one of the guys I'm going up with has a camera (mine is old shool mini-vhs) so i wont need it.

This is a fkna bitchin' idea. Some suggestions, if I may:

-All of the footage should be submitted raw. Editing already edited footage takes some of the magic out of it, and all the stuff you edited out because you think it's lame, everyone else may think is funny.
-Footage should be submitted regardless of format. You can dub anything to anything else, and you can always dirty up very clean footage to match the crappy footage.
-Shoot everything in color. You can make color b&w if you want, but not the other way around.
-In addition to the paperwork passed around with the camera each tape should be slated at the head with the date, location, and who's behind the camera. And, obviously, the camera op should say who it is they're filming.

I may be able to work something out here at work to get use of an avid on my free time, have tapes dubbed, digitize footage, or possibly have dvds made. More on that when the time comes.

LM, I think if you've got that camera ready you should send it to someone who'll be in Mammoth this or next weekend. I haven't been up yet, but it's going off, and there's plenty of maggots who'll be there - Comish, CS, Barnballs, Bullet, Yogachik, etc.

    This idea does not suck!

Please make sure it goes to the EC for a stint...and if we have the camera, people will have to show up (I know, I know...).

It would be neat to film at Jay Peak but for the folks who can't go so far up, maybe we can meet at old-time Plattekill, NY one day after a snow dump.

Man, I would roll around in the snow in my underwear and a feather boa if we can get all the EC'ers to show up at one resort one weekend!

    Sold!

SaAaH (and was also gonna say that, while I don't know how my miniDV quality will stack up against this hi8, I will happily donate some footage of whatever I crank out),

Sounds like a great idea, my folks have a Hi8 camera somewhere that never gets used, maybe I can pull that out of the mothballs.

This might be a better way to go (but still send the camera around too).

If we each send in our own tape, it'll be easier to edit and know who is who, what it what, etc. ... just my .02 ....

Hmm, lots of great ideas and such in here, thanks everyone.

Droopy et al. - I think everyone sending in their own tapes is a great idea, but should be something separate from this project. I think (thanks 13) this may yield a more powerful result if we stick to footage shot with my old camera as its passed from hand to hand around the globe. The eventual film will end up with more of a soulful feel if the finished product is a collective of effort with a level playing field of equipment (my opinion).

Also, from a technical standpoint, if we resort to letting people submit their own footage, we'd not only end up with a mess of different format tapes, but also the quality would be different from location to location, and I must admit that always kind of bothers me when I see a film shot with a variety of different cameras/film media.

Although, digital footage would make it easy to edit. If only we had a digital camera to pass around.

So I guess a decision needs to be made - do we
    a) collect footage from people and create a film with it
    b) limit the footage to that shot with my old camera?

Perhaps I'll edit the original post to include a poll to gauge the public opinion...

Just got to work, and of course Lane has yet another fucking incredible idea. Nice job homie. Im of course all n and will shoot, edit, ski, hike, and mail the camera wherever to contibute in any way possible.

One thing comes to mind though, regarding the camera... Just so the footage matches from location to location, shooter to shooter... you may want to send an instruction sheet with the camera for setting white balance and other setup instructions so that the footage blends and doesnt look like a patchquilt at the end.

Also, on a related note that I was thinking of posting(but in no way want to hijack this awesome thread)... I stepped up and bought a 16mm last month and I will be making the rounds across the west after Dec 31st-- when you know of a truly epic storm coming your way PM me and hopefully I can get out to capture all the mags in their natural hucking habitat.

---Sick Idea grant. way to step up to the plate -- Just wondering if anyone has a camera that is a digital w/ firewire that they would be willing to contribute -- would make digitizing the footage alot easier/faster.

There should be a continuum of accompanying accoutrements, like a hat, some gloves, goggles or suitably bent prothesis of some special design.

Will the footage be limited to skiing? How about a maggot cooking show specializing in teutonic treats with their own special sauces, produced by none other than a cadre of cooks with Hitler mustaches?
