    BALI INFO NEEDED

Going to bali march 25th through april 17th.

Should I bring a board. I dont think my oregon board is appropriate for Bali waves and Im wondering if the price of purchase plus travel is worth it. Any thoughts?

Also, if anyone has any thoughts on good places to stay, see, and most importantly surf, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks

I've never surfed Indo, but all I will say is, get your board dialed before you go.

so the travel company my buddy bought the tickets through somehow screwed up and did not purchase the tickets. Now they are another 150$ and I am pissed. I am still going to buy the tickets though, I want to go so bad.

That said, should I try to go with sigapore so I can bring a board? Do they not charge?

I get the feeling that I should bring a board from what im hearing but am still not sure. Any definitive tips about boards available in bali would greatly be appreaciated.

stoked for you. bali is great!

http://www.indosurf.com.au/ - imho this is a great book also. you can get it there at most surf shops.

to take a board or not. no offense but i hate these questions. do you have a good board bag? do you like your board and feel confident you will be able to handle it in some powerful waves? if so then bring it. just one board flies free on most cross pac flights but you should check with the airline to be sure. dont bring much you wont need it and what you do need you can buy cheap there. all depends on where you stay too. yes you can buy a board but it is about the same cost as a board in the US. i have had to do the board shopping thing with someone else who didnt bring a board - it was kind of a drag. when surf is pumping and you are jet lagged its not as fun as you may think looking for a stick. then you either leave the board there or buy a bag also and bring it back? plenty of rentals in some areas but again maybe a hassle to deal with.

    fullers,
Thanks for you opinion. I have a 5'10" rusty phrianna(sp?) S-Core that I use in oregon. It works great for the waves here. I have a nice travel bag. However, from my research, it seems that a thruster would be more appropriate for bali waves.
China air charges 100$ for the research that I have done.

The idea of searching for a surfboard while jet lagged knowing that I am blowing a day of good surf sounds horrible. however, I dont want to spend a ton on a board here than show up and not have the proper stick.
    Its a really tough decision.

It might be better to just buy a shortboard (preferably a rounded pin) there. Lots of good 2nd hand boards on Poppies 1 & 2 in Kuta, and some good ones out at Uluwatu as well. You will have to haggle, but expect to pay about the same as at home. The Australia-Indo connection is in full effect, and I saw some good boards when I was there. Of course, you could always drop the cheddar on a sick Merrick and just roll up to Ulu's rocking that thing.

Drink lots of Bintangs, and push yourself. The waves there are so perfect it lets you take your surfing up a notch. Get ready to get dropped in on- a lot. INDO. It's so siiiiick:

Buy boards there. $200-250 and you can sell'em back when you're done. You're gonna break one or two if the waves are on but March/April is way early for the real swells so it might be mellower than I've seen it. Upside is it won't be as crowded so maybe no need to take a boat to Lombok or G-Land.
Here's all the spots and info for Kuta and the Bukit: http://www.surfline.com/travel/index.cfm?id=2169
Pack light enough that you can carry everything on a scooter, one backpack and one small duffel that you can fit between your feet. Two boards is the max for the scooter racks. You DON'T want to drive a car there and you need a scooter to get around. Get a cheap place in Kuta your first night so you can get a game plan together and party some, then get your ass down to the Bukit.
