Camp Muir Trip Report- NOW with quicktime movie

Well, after living in the NW for 3 years I finally made it up to Camp Muir yesterday (Saturday). I was pretty sweet. Just a great hike up. The weather was pretty much white out until 9,000 ft when we cleared a good chunk of the clouds. Of course, by the time we made it out of the little shelter it had started to snow, so white out the whole way down- but good snow conditions for the most part. I was skiing some Atomic 10.50- Race boots and Head Monster 85s- heavy set up, but made for a great ride down. Some breakable crust, but some smooth packed pow. We were able to ski all the way down to paradise w/o taking our stuff off! (Pictures coming soon I hope.)

Anyway- since then it's been snowing. Maybe Mt. Hood Meadows is opening this coming weekend!? Pray for snow. -kb

No actual sking pics, but if you want to see Camp Muir or the snowfield, here it is.

Yeah- Had to get back to Salem and I didn't realize there was a party. Don't usually read those threads because nothing is ever happening down here in Oregon.

Anyway, got some pics in a .mov file:

There's occasional shit going on in PDX. Stay in touch doood, Pete and I will be hiking for turns in a couple of weeks or so.

Kinda grim, but thought I should post it here. A couple climbers got caught in an avalanche above Muir on Sunday, one of them died: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...erdeath25.html

Thanks for the photos kb and sorry to rain on your thread

I'm very sorry to hear this. On Saturday I spoke to these climbers about their future plans for Denali in the little hut on Camp Muir. They were planning their own assent up the West Butress Route on Denali and had their permits, gear, etc, all ready to go. They were heading up to their Saturday night loacation just as we started skiing down and the snow started falling. My thoughts to their families and friends.

Yeah, that's a lot. I remember the guy I was climbing with ask one of the guys if they had a beacon and they said "that was the only piece of equipment they needed for Denali". We were wondering then- all their other gear was brand new. It was snowing on Saturday- there was certainly some avalanche danger with out a dought.

Anyway, Steep, it was good to get the first turns of the year in for me. It's raining here in Salem now, maybe dumping in the mountains tonight?

Apparently this accident was a snow bridge collapse on the glacier not an avalanche - both climbers got caught in it (I guess they were roped?) one of them managed to self rescue. A beacon certainly might have helped him to locate the guy who passed. - RIP

Same here. My wife is out of town and saw it on the news and thought I was up there. So now I am going to hear it everytime I go backcountry skiing up there. That is terrible news about that guy. I can't believe you were able to ski all the way down to Paradise. I was there two weeks ago and the rocks weren't near being covered up between the snow field and Paradise. It does make me apprehensive about going up on any glaciers until more snow falls
