Where to go in December (for a week-end)?

    Hi there,
In December I will be in New York to work (from Europe). I am wondering whether I should bring my skis and spend a long weekend (Thursday - Sunday most likely). The question is whether this is at all doable within reason. Two criteria; (1) The snow and skiing should be very good. It is all about steep long powder runs. (2) It should be accessible from NY for a long weekend (departure Thursday afternoon, return Sunday afternoon/night). So not to far away from the nearest airport.

I have been thinking maybe Alta (or is it too early for utah?) or some place in the Canadian rockies. But I don't have a clue so I am open for any suggestions.

Can't wait to hit the snow now!

    Talking

    When in Dec?

Cause I think there is maybe a maggot MINI summit in Utah or something like that Dec 15-20. The thread is at the top of the board here.

    Wanna meet some maggots?

Check Jetblue.com Should be able to find some deals there- and yes, I'd go to Utah if I were you. Go straight to Alta/Bird/Basin. you'll be glad you did.
    ...and.....
paging..... Snorkeldeep? He's usually got a line on deals from NYC

    week-end trip

    Thank's for the replys, guys.

I don't know exactly when I will be in NY. The most likely week is 6th to 9th. So the weekend 10th-12 of dec is most probable. I've seen the thread about the utah mini summit, but I haven't really figured out what it is all about (I'm new to this forum). Is it just a bunch of ski affectionados who get together, or what? And also; is it a problem that the area gets skied up too fast in such occasions? It sounds like it could be a lot of fun to meet some skiers from "over there" though. Will anyone be around the weekend 10th to 12th of dec?

Two years ago I and some friends was in Jackson Hole 10 days from the 15th of december. We were a bit unlucky, as there was too little snow (the hobacks never opened). (We had a great time though, and got in some very good cat-skiing in the grand targhee area). Is Alta any more secure in terms of snow at that time of the year?

elevens and i are going to utah from the 9th to the 12th on a jetblue deal - 2 for 1 tix.. if you can find someone to go with you it makes it really cheap.. we're paying 150 a head which is great.

utah already has received a lot of snow this year - as you can see from the posts on the board here. i wont forecast anything, but so far so good

Paypal $1,000 to confirmedutahsnow@slc.com to make sure they funnel the clouds in for your visit. Why risk it?

    Thanks again..

Alta sounds tempting, and easy access from SLC as well. For accommodation are people staying in SLC or closer to the resorts? If in the resorts, which one? And as I understand from the official thread, the summit will respect the regulations in Utah and abide by a strict non-alcohol policy for the after-ski and parties. Good for the skiing...

I need to find out what week I will actually be working in NYC. If it all works out, it would be great to check out the famous Utah snow and mountains and meet some of you guys.
