    WWMDMD

So my old, cheapo minidisc player is crapping out on me, skipping all the time, probably as a result of our 2 year old throwing it on the floor ten or fifteen times (before she was 2). I picked up an MD 'high capacity digital music player' from BestBuy for about twice the $100 I spent on my first player, and don't know if I should hold onto it or not (thinking return, just bought it tonight). It's netMD with something called Atrac and can store 45 hours on one Hi-MD disc (at the lowest sound quality). Thing is, I've never downloaded any music at all, except to hear a few random things while I'm sitting at the computer. Every time I've heard mp3 stored songs from other people's players they've sounded like shit (I can hear the compression even on my crappy car stereo).
So I don't think I'd really use all the cool new features for downloading music that this player has. But I definitely need a new MD player.
    Should I?? Or not?
One other thing, my old player was play only, no record, since I have an MD/CD deck for recording all my music. So I don't really need a player that records, either.

When I ask for someone to tell me what to do, I expect SOMEONE TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO! So shut up already and just tell me what to do.

uh huh. if you want my md player you can have it. i don't have the patience for 1 to 1 recording and managing the shitload of md's.

sharp MD-MS722, look it up in google... there are plenty of reviews. i forget how old it is (maybe 5 years?) but it still works.

I *think* the netmd only allows you to download songs ripped from its own software. or at least it used to be like that, which was the reason i decided against it. you had to rip your CDs with their software, and download thru their interface. PITA. plus you cant record mp3s that you dl from kazaa or whatever.

another solution if you prefer MD (like i do) is to get a XITEL DG2 which is an interface unit that allows you to record MDs from a computer mp3 source. the only downside is that you have to record in realtime. if you rip or download your mp3s at 192kb i think it would be difficult to hear any sound degradation.

i've preferred MD to MP3 players due to the fact i can take many disks along and change out rather than being stuck with the same X songs on my mp3 player. today's high capacity players reduce or eliminate this problem, but the players are still much more expensive than a typical MD player. i've bought two MD players for about $50 each, so even if i drop or crush one its no big loss.

If you don't like it now you won't like it later. Return it and look into getting a mp3 player.

I've ripped all my discs to mp3. I ripped them at a high sampling rate (324bps) and they sound good. If you're downloading it is hard to find high samling rate files but if you own the discs you can rip it and rip it good. If I were in the market I'd look for a 40gig Ipod or something similar. A bit spendy but you could hold a shit pile of music and it can not skip.

I don't know if that was a blanket offer but I'm game for such a thing. I've never even had a portable cd player, let alone MD. Yah I'm eternally in the poorhouse
