Face it, manned space flight is for egos only. Great things came of it, but nothing that wouldn't have or could have been developed with out it, e.g. the cordless drive. Did it really take Apollo to come up this that idea?

I am all for funding science and science education. Put the money back in the universities and start educating people on science instead of teaching kids how to screw people on Wall Street.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

historically, war has been the main technology driver on this planet

nevermind that Communism and The Catholic Church have been the biggest drivers of literacy in the world, the space race was a stroke of pure Soviet genius in that it gave the superpowers something positive to do, for once

Oh and then there's the idea being tossed around that the mining operation will most likely be international in scope, which always means the US will bear the brunt of the costs.

I'd much rather spend that money on developing new clean energy resources in the US, becoming a world leader in those technologies, and then shopping them to the rest of the world. This would create millions of jobs here, foster the development of new US based companies, and gain us a competitive advantage in one of the world's largest burgeoning industries.

But that's not as exciting as shooting Buck Rogers to the moon, so fuck it. We're going to the moon!!!
Fucking A, Arty, that's as well-said as anything I've read on here in quite a while.

Summit? Splat's right, that was WAY too much info, man.

You guys are missing the big picture of why manned space exploration and colonization is important.

Get us off this planet, says Hawking - April 22, 2008

Steven Hawking has called for a new focus on space exploration to ensure a future for humanity.

At a speech marking 50 years of Nasa he compared the current situation to Europe before America was discovered (press notice). “Spreading out into space will have an even greater effect. It will completely change the future of the human race and maybe determine whether we have any future at all,” AFP quotes him saying.

“If the human race is to continue for another million years, we will probably have to go where nobody has gone before,” he added, according to ABC.

Hawking brushed aside worries over the cost of space exploration, saying, “There will be those who will argue that it would be better to spend our money solving the problems of this planet, like climate change and pollution, rather than possibly wasting it on a fruitless search for a new planet. But we can do that and still spare a quarter of a percent of world GDP for space. Isn’t our future worth a quarter of a percent?”

The fact that we have the ability to begin doing this, and we aren't, is a travesty.

Dude, you're free to start a space exploration company and show us that you live by your free market ideals. Maybe if enough of you are out there you can convince SpaceX to issue an IPO and then you don't even have to go all in.

I mean in alot of ways the discovery of the western hemisphere was a for profit endeavor. Spices silk ect. Of course its unlikely that we will hit a planet capable of sustaining life on our way to the moon or mars but hey you never know.

You have no clue what my beliefs are. You know what I have posted, but then you have taken that, found which body of thought is commonly associated with the things I posted, and then mistakenly attributed that entire body of thought to me.

You have also taken some of the things I have said, drawn some very odd conclusions based on those posts, and then attributed to me the body of thought that is commonly associated with the conclusions you drew.

    Stop it.

Your instincts and intuition are fucked. If you want to know what I believe about a certain subject in a certain context, ask me. If, for some odd reason, you want to know how my opinion on a certain subject fits into the larger picture as I see it, or how something I said juxtaposes against something I have said in the past, ask me. If you don't ask me(and your track record is any indication) then you are likely going to be wrong about what I believe.

dude, you are one of the biggest "high-horsers" around here. You do EXACTLY what you are so butthurt about above when you say self-aggrandizing things like "ignorance, it really is our most expensive commodity". You might as well just say "fuck off and eat a bag of dicks" and move on, that would be easier to swallow (teehee)! This is supposed to be about world topics, not about the inner workings of Rubi. Maybe we should get another forum where you can explain specifically about how you are constantly misunderstood and everyone else is incorrect, if not factually, then philosophically, or allegorically what have you. Just save us all the greif and type ibid or something next time and we'll know to go back and read the above paragraph for the 1000th time!

You are the one who as no clue what you are taking about in that thread and even a quick read of the relevant Wiki pages would cure you of your ignorance. But you won't even do that. Instead you would rather ridicule the people who know what they are talking about. After so many years of dealing with people like you I have simply lost interest in looking out for your misguided feelings. You don't like your ignorance being pointed out? Then stop parading it around. Knowledge is more accessible now than any other time in human history. If you feel the need to be outspoken about something, there is absolutely no excuse for being ignorant of the subject matter.

This is supposed to be about world topics, not about the inner workings of Rubi.
I agree, so stop attributing beliefs and positions to me that I don't hold. There are a handful of people here who are fond of talking about people's beliefs then when they are corrected launch into "it's not all about you" chants.

You don't want to talk about me? Then don't talk about me or attribute beliefs to me that I don't hold. It's that simple. And when somebody else feels the need to talk about me and my beliefs, and I respond, don't jump on me for responding to it, talk to them instead.

    wiki-wiki whaaaaaaa?

you said the breeder reactor uses almost all of the fuel, I expressed concern about the remainder, then you said I was an ignoramus for being concerned and alluding to the extra fuel having to go somewhere.

but you are right, I shouldn't have gone back into the infinite loop. Sorry about that

I called highangle an ignoramus, not you. In response to you I posted the information that addressed the waste from a breeder reactor.

OMG! Here's a real life actual article on this subject, from a science and technology website, which normally geeks out on such things and as such would normally support something like Constellation...

    http://arstechnica.com/science/news/...xploration.ars

It links to an article from over a year ago, which reports on a study...that was commissioned by the Bush Administration...which basically said that the Constellation program was essentially a joke...

The real breakthrough in manned space flight will be a space plane, that takes off like a plane and flies to space and then returns. Imagine NY to Tokyo flights in under an hour....
This is the worst pain EVER!

It's about fucking time. I will miss the sonic booms that made my house jump when the Shuttle came in though. Now if they were offering zero gravity sex flights, I think they would be on to something. Of course that might turn out to be as disappointing as water bed sex.
