My next ski car, (when it comes to the US)

New Golf R is being shown at the Montreal Auto show to gauge interest for the Canada market, inferring that it is coming to the US already. It seems like they are just deciding between which configurations to offer, MT vs. sissymatic, 3 door vs. 5 door, etc. I only want the MT, or I'd just buy the A3.

The GTD won't have AWD which the R has. A GTD with 4Motion would be great.

That was my initial thought, but the US is the bigger market, and they didn't bring the R32 to Canada. The rumormill at the VW forums goes like this:

The way I look at this is that I think the R is a go for the US, just seeing whether they will bring any to Canada too or just leave it.

"This ultimate Golf will go on sale in Germany in late 2009, and after some internal back and forth, VW has decided to offer the R model in America.

VW will first show the R-series Golf on May 21 at the ADAC 24-hour race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Volkswagen will also launch an R version of the sporty, Golf-based Scirocco. Equipped with the same engine as the R20, it will be front-wheel-drive. Torque steer will be managed by an electronic differential VW calls XDS—and a prayer.

So far, no Scirocco is slated for a U.S. launch. But the Golf R is, and we couldn’t be more excited".

I need a vehicle with a fraction of the handling capability and fun of a car, that gets half of the gas mileage, has half the practicality of a car in any other situation but out-of-town driving, and (much) less cabin space than a Ford Focus?

The MKV did nothing for me, but this MKVI could be good. It still won't sound like the MKIV though, and that's the biggest joy of the MKIV to me. I have never owned a car that has seen so little stereo use

It would pull my sled just fine if I wanted to put a hitch on it. My crew has enough trucks to go around for that though. It's great on gas, goes like stink, and is a blast to drive on snowy BC highways. It won't pull my boat but I don't need to take it out of the lake in the summer.

And don't worry about the balls, plenty to go around.
