Do you mean this interview?...
60 seconds with Shane
McConkey on K2, the Spatula and what's next.
Powder: So Shane, everyone wants to know, what does the new deal with K2 mean for the Spatula?
McConkey: When Atomic bought Volant, they owned a "patent pending." It's my understanding that when a patent expires, it means it's fair game for everyone. I don't think Atomic is planning on doing anything productive at all with Volant, which is too bad. From what I've heard, the Spatula concept is fair game for anyone in the industry right now.
Powder: Does that mean a Spatula-inspired K2 ski might be on the horizon?
McConkey: I just signed, I haven't even been up to kiss babies or shake hands, and I don't want to be their ski engineer or anything, but I'm definitely going to push them to come up with something. The Spatula concept is definitely a specialty ski, a powder-specific ski—which is a money loser—but in this industry, if there's a tool out there that just works better for powder, it needs to happen
Powder: Why K2?
McConkey: I'm relieved to be dialed in with a cool company. There are lots of choices these days, both with old guys and all these new punk lines, but K2 is well-established and has always had it figured out. They're really interested in their athletes when it comes to design input. They don't just sign for name association; they've really dialed in the athlete/company relationship better than anyone in the past 30 years.
Powder: What will you be skiing on this year?
McConkey: I'm not sure exactly. Primarily the [Apache] Chief, but other K2 stuff too.
Powder: What's in store for the season?
McConkey: Traveling, filming. I'm definitely heading back to Europe to find more cliffs. I'm designing a two-parachute BASE jump system for double stagers. I want to do more than just front flips.
Powder: And, more wacky antics.
There were pics and stuff, but I didn't have the time to post.
There was also the official announcement:
ig Mountain Ski Legend Shane McConkey joins K2
VASHON ISLAND, Wash. (October 15, 2004) - Legends have been made on K2 Skis for more than forty years and it is time to add the name Shane McConkey to that list. McConkey signed a sponsorship agreement with the ski brand on Thursday morning and the two sides are pumped on the deal. Shane will be riding and promoting the latest in K2 skis, helmets and poles, and will be actively involved in product development to ensure K2's wider-waisted Apache freeride skis fit the style and performance needs of all skiers. McConkey joins the likes of K2 legends Glen Plake and Seth Morrison in addition to athletes Pep Fujas, Mark Abma, Chris Turpin and Rory Silva.
Shane McConkey
"It's natural for Shane to be riding K2s. His attitude and personality embodies everything that K2 is about, balancing a humorous personality with a serious and passionate approach to the sport," says Ski Team Manager Mike Gutt. "Shane is always looking for creative ways to challenge the limits of the sport and just like K2, he does everything his own unique way."
McConkey has a long list of accomplishments on skis including medals in both the X Games and Gravity games, top awards from ESPN, Freeze and Powder magazines, but it is his film segments that have built his cult-like following. His skiing speaks for itself, but his personality and an ability to think beyond convention keeps people on the edge of their seats wondering what he is going to do next. During the past two years Shane has combined his love for skiing and BASE jumping, taking both sports to new limits.
but I think you probably read that one already...
Cheers.

"Coming here and asking whether you need wider skis is like turning up at the Neverland Ranch and asking Michael if he'd like to come to Tampa with the kids" -bad roo.
