Consider me moved! It's sort of sad to think that I may never spend more than a weekend on SJI from now on after spending 7 of the past 8 summers there, but it's time to move on.
I just spent a few days visiting the folks in the Bay Area, and I was surprised at the prices compared to the island.
$1.57 a gallon for gas
$.99 for THREE POUNDS of pears
Not to mention the climbing, the surfing, the MILFs, the music...

I just got back from CA and I'm currently on a couch in B'ham. In a few days I'm off to Mexico for a month, then I'll be back at Baker for a month (Glacier? B'ham?). Then I'm on the road in the Western US for two months, then Europe for two months. After that, I have no clue!

Darn, hop, I was hoping to at least get together for more than 2 minutes once while you were here. I'll keep at eye for you at Baker.
It would be a hard place to leave, but between the politics and the prices, it just isn't a working guy's island.
Unfortunately, I've gotten picky about where I go...I'll just keep looking until the right thing comes along, and I'll keep eating top ramne in the meantime.

Yeah Grrrr... Whale-related politics are some of the main reasons I took off for AK last summer and I'm doing everything I can to get back up there next summer. Around here there are too many people that confuse science with activism, opinion, perception, and bullshit, which makes doing real science nearly impossible. Up there you have the luxury of not trying to work under the spotting scopes of millionaires with friends in the senate that don't like to see boats "harassing" whales. Not to mention those fucking mopeds clogging up the roads

Drop me an email when you get ready for your west coast road trip, I'll be doing some of those this winter as well. I've got a cabin in Skyko this winter and I'll be teaching to cover my costs but I hope to take several week long road trips, it'd be cool to split costs if we're headed in the same direction.
