Chucky. It'll happen. Watch. He basically had it last time around. Al Davis put him between a rock and a hard place though. The Raiders had just made the playoffs and Davis told Gruden if he wanted to pursue the Notre Dame job he would have to quit on the spot and not coach the Raiders through the playoffs. Naturally, Gruden wouldn't bail on his team. Plus ND needed to announce a coach ASAP for recruiting. There's an article posted in the following link that explains it all in greater depth.

    http://sportsforum.ws/showthread.html?t=10448

Interesting Note: Both Willingham and Gruden signed 5 year contracts in early 2002.

It looks like there are some closet ND followers in here? (sniff) I've never felt (weep) more at home (snurgle) in my life.

    Thanks for the link Arty.

I have just given up and figure that ND has no chance at luring Gruden again.

Like I said, I don't want to see Willingham go, because I know he'll move on and be successful elsewhere. Sometimes though, things like that BC game even make my knee jerk.

If they could just find some way to clone Ara....

It doesn't matter much what happens to Utah this year, because next year Meyer is going to Florida.

Does anyone ever wonder what would happen to the BCS if a "strength of conference" rating was added to the computer ratings?

I say if you can go undefeated in the SEC or the Big 10, you rightfully deserve to be on top of the heap. Those conferences are the toughest to stack a shitload of W's in, and the Big 12 could be if the North Division teams didn't suck ass.

Don't plan on it. Meyer has a huge buyout and a contractthat states that he can only talk to three teams, OSU, ND and Michigan. He is a midwest guy. Machen played a very small role in hiring Meyer. The AD did most of the work.

edit: Utah leapfrogs Wisconsin, now 6 in BCS ranking.

That should just be taken care of with a general strength of schedule rating. If you play in a tough conference the majority of your games will be tough games, and the rating would reflect that. And it would still allow for dinging teams like Florida who pad their schedule with teams like Eastern Michigan University, rather than basing everything on their conference.

WTF are you talking about FL padding their schedule? FL's schedule includes TN, GA, SC, LSU, AR,and FSU, 4 of which are ranked in the top 25 (top 20, actually), SC just fell out of the top 25 last week, and AR could beat the lesser teams in the to 25. Not to mention they would have to play the SEC West champion (most likely Auburn) to make it into a BCS bowl.

Dammit, I hate taking up for those f'ing Gators!

PS: If UF wants Meyer and Meyer wants to go there, he will be residing in Gainesville by January 15. UF can/will pay whatever it takes to get the caoch they want, contracts be damned. Personally , I'd like to see Zook signed to a 20 yr contract though.

Gotta take care of those SEC East opponents first to make the championship game, it's kinda changed the dynamics of the rivalries. And since Mike Shula coaching at AL, we got that going for us.

There is no way that a team like Florida or any of those SEC felon factories should be playing teams like EMU, Middle Tennesee State, Louisiana Monroe, UNLV, etc. It's a joke. Those teams should practically be Div 1-AA.

FSU has a strong schedule without one joke team on it... (okay, well maybe Duke.)

Meanwhile, trouble's brewing on the Big 10 message boards:

You gave PSU football a D+....Jesus....as someone who's watched PSU football for the better part of 25+ years........that's a generous grade. I'm not sure there's any letter in the alphabet that equates to how bad they're playing. Joe needs to go....right now.
It's not gonna be an orgy. It's a toga party.

PennSt vs Iowa , just pathetic football, both teams are just awful, Joe has to go or it will take PennSt another 10 years to recover. And how can Iowa be ranked ? because they are rank ( beaten 44-0 while being ranked #12 huh ). Funny thing is neither of these teams are the worst the Big10 has to offer , believe it or not their are 4 other teams in worst shape then these two horrible teams.

I can't believe there's a team worse than PSU right now.....Joe needs to go, but he just signed an extension until he's 82. How do you tell him? Do you fire him? Can't. How do you handle it?

FSU has a strong schedule? They have an ACC schedule, there is a difference. (So, UAB is a strong opponent now?)

Heh, thanks Dave. Good to see someone sticking up for us, even if it hurts. I think Zook should have another year, but think he was fighting upstream with a ton of fan mudslinging and all the FireRonZook crap.

Scoob, there's no top-tier team who plays a 100% strong schedule. Sooo...you're an idiot if you think so.

OK, so maybe I glanced over UAB when looking at their schedule.

All I am saying is that putting a team like EMU on your schedule is like putting a guaranteed win on your schedule. If the top tier SEC teams are so dominant, why do they schedule games like that? If we had more of the top teams playing each other during the season, instead of wasting their times with MAC schools, we wouldn't have to always worry about what to do with three or four undefeated teams.

Sorry to make you feel less at home, but I absolutly hate Notre Dame. Until Miami, VT, and BC went all Benedict Arnold on us, I hated no sports team in the world more then I hated ND. Watching Pitt beat the assholses from South Bend at the last game at Pitt stadium is one of the best moments of my life.

My dad is even worse. A few years ago at a pitt basketball game against ND, the Irish beat us on a couple of late 3's after Pitt had been up pretty big most of the second half. Once ND took the lead a few Irish fans started getting pretty loud behind us. My father, normally one of the quietist guys you'll ever meet, turned around and screamed "God Damnit I hate all you Fucking poeple" at the top of his lungs. Little kids were crying. He is a maniac sometimes.

VIVA- JoPa needs to stick around as long as possible. I want to see just how much Penn State can suck. Fuck them too.

How can anyone hate Notre Dame? The Gipper, Rockne, Ara, Holtz, Willing......er, Leahy?
    What has Pitt ever done?

Nine national championships? I guess that don't mean shit.

How bout producing some of the biggest stars to ever play the game? Where would SNL be if Pitt alum Mike Ditka hadn't coached 'da bears?

What about probably the best passer to ever play the game, Dan Marino? He grew up two blocks from campus and then played an amazing four years at Pitt.

What about Tony Dorsett? Set the all time NCAA rushing record, (currently third or fourth I think) won a Hiesman trophy, a collegiate national champoinship, an NFL rookie of the year, Super bowl victory, and I think a super bowl MVP, all in about a 13 month period of time. He is currently fourth all time on the NFL rushing list.

And speaking of guys moving up the NFL all time rushing list, how about Curtis Martin? He passed Jim Brown yesterday to move into sixth place. I think that qualifies Pitt as the only school to have two alums in the NFL top ten for rushing yards all time.

Other players of note include College Game Day analyst Mark May, offesive lineman Bill Fralic, Defensive great Hugh Green, Larry Fitzgerald, Antonio Bryant, Kevyn Barlow, Shawntae Spencer, Iron Head Heyward, and the list goes on.

I'm not saying Pitt is the best program in the country or that Notre Dame hasn't done some amazing things over the years, but that has nothing to do with the fact that I can't stand the bastards. It is sports, blind hatred of other teams is mearly a fact of being a dumb ass sports fan.

They wear powder blue. The mascot is a teddy bear. The football team quits before halftime. Their tradition is non-existant. Their silent motto is, "Commitment to mediocrity".
