    Busted Frame

So, I was messing around at the local dirt jumps, just having a good time and for once actually cleaning the rythm sections. I'm not sure exactly how it happened, but at some point during the day, I managed to fold, and subsequently crack the tob tube and down tube on my Cortina hardtail. Funny thing is, there were no wrecks or significant carnage. The only thing I can think of is at one point I came up way, way too short on one of the bigger jumps, totally high-siding the landing.

So, I didn't buy the frame from Cortina, but from a friend who is friends with the guys at Cortina, so maybe something can be worked out. If not, anybody here know anything about the Azonic steelhead? Cheap and durable. Might be my new frame.

Besides the fact that I busted a perfectly good frame, the dirt jumping was freaking sweet, and, well, I nearly busted a frame in half and didn't even hurt myself. How cool is that?

    The damage:

Thats awesome and shitty at the same time.
I was amazed at how light and fluffy the powdery snow was and at how the challenge never ended.

I haven't beeen on a steelhead myself, but ride with a bunch of people who do. From what they tell me it's a sweet frame all the way. Flexier than most steel frames, but still a great frame. They definately hold up to a punishment. I ride a ds1 which I think is similar geometry and the frame feels sweet. For a $200 price tag I don't think you can beat the steelhead.

The only feedback I have heard about steelheads is that they feel a bit short. This is 2nd hand information though. Again, how can you afford NOT to buy it, you are losing money by not making the purchase.

The crack is probably a fatigue issue (that was the story on mine when I looked at the break). As soon as the crack on the top tube oes and has some play in it then the down tube will just crumple.

    Good work fella!

I believe your frame cracked because you are a pussy who should go bigger.

At least that's what Frizzo told me.

Since you are looking for a replacement, you may want to know that the word on the street is that the evil doc frame is going to turn some heads this year

If by "Bootleg" you mean "Alta" and by "show me how" you mean "ski with me" then you've got yourself a deal!

Well, admittedly, I beat the hell out of that bike, riding it primarily at skate parks, around town doing dumb stuff, and dirt jumping it. So it saw a good deal of abuse.

phUnk, don't be a scared pooner [/frizzo]. You have all winter to ski. Give up one weekend of skiing rocks and get your ass down and ride Bootleg then check out the fools at the Red Bull.

Maybe I should grab phUnk and make him come down there with me? Unless I'm at Alta too.........

I had all summer to ride.

Plus, when you weigh as much as I do (I'm up to 98 pounds) and ski a fat ski, you don't really hit many rocks.

I give in. What's all this Bootleg & Red Bull noise about?

Did you hear about how TelePhil rode into the stream on the Crest downhill? BWA!

Ok, your reasoning is sound. However, this is a sweet event to check out and some good riding to be had in and around Virgin.

The Red Bull noise is all about this
where all the best riders in the world congregate and get stupid on a mountain bike. Really cool to see.

Bootleg is a little spot outside Vegas where a bunch of downhill and xc trail, plus some sweet jumps have been built. Good fun and almost guaranteed carnage (my first and only time there I hit a gap (on accident) and came up about 5 feet short, from about 10 feet up.) I was thinking of hitting it up on the way to Virgin, when funken chimed in that he and hev would be there on Friday (Oct.29) as well. Then Mr. Altagirl and GT laid claim too. Of course that was until the snow started falling and all the crack whores began salivating over the fresh white stuff. So who knows who's going now.

trainvain and WC: I've heard good things about evil, but I have a really hard time throwing down $700+ for a hardtail that is just going to be abused.

And yeah, I only briefly heard about Telephil's bender into the creekbed. I think he too is scared to come ride in the desert.

Cool, thanks man. Good looking bike, and really well built. But I can't be waiting until Dec for a new frame. If I did that, all my newly developed DJ steeze would wither away.
