F$%# Wal-Mart in Its Stupid F&^%ing Ass (nsr)

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. Is nothing sacred under the all-mighty dollar? If this shtbox opens it's doors, I will never shop at Wal -Mart ever again. Oh wait, I already don't....why doesn't FOX News cover this kind of thing? Way more people would be pissed off about it if they did.

    BBC Story
    Mexican wrath over Wal-Mart store

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/image...an_bbc_203.jpg The Wal-Mart store will be finished by December

Mexican writers and artists have joined a campaign to stop the US retailer, Wal-Mart, from opening a store near the famous ruins of Teotihuacan.
In an open letter to President Vicente Fox, the group says the store should be built further away from the ruins.

Those who signed the letter include painter Francisco Toledo and novelist Laura Esquivel.

Correspondents say as the store is almost complete, the campaign is unlikely to succeed.

"Teotihuacan is for Mexicans our greatest cultural heritage, an expression of our history and our identity as a people and nation," the writers and artists said in the letter.

The president's office had no immediate comment.

    Parking-lot memorial

The discount store, scheduled to open by December, is located about half a mile (1 kilometre) from a tourist park housing the 2,000-year-old ruins which is a designated United Nations World Heritage Site.

There are a lot of other smaller businesses in the area.

Wal-Mart has legal permission to build the store, while the national anthropology institute that oversees the ruins says the building poses no threat.

But local protestors say the discount store will spoil the site, kill small enterprise and change the way of life in the area.

We're afraid it would open the door to more development ... McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken

    Mr Aridjis, writer and activist
Three of them spent a week on a hunger strike in protest.

    Job hopes?

Activists in the US have sometimes campaigned successfully to prevent Wal-Mart stores from being built.

Some people, however, are looking forward to the low prices the store and employment the store will bring.

No one is certain who founded the pyramids which are thought to have been abandoned around AD 600.

The Aztecs later came upon it and named it Teotihuacan - The Place Where Men Become Gods.

A small altar unearthed during the construction of the Wal-Mart store will be preserved in its parking lot.

Yeah, that went over real well, especially this part (from the Honolulu Advertiser on 10/13/04: (Advertiser Story )

Outside, about 25 protesters peacefully displayed signs expressing their frustration over how Wal-Mart handled the discovery of human bones during store construction.

"Bury Iwi" read one sign. "Built on Graves" said another.

The Native Hawaiian Legal Corp. recently complained that the iwi, or bones, should have been reburied before the store opening.
The director of the Hative Hawaiian Legal Corporation is a family friend, and she and her colleagues fought so hard against this store opening. Fuckers. Makes me livid to know the disrespect with which the Hawaiians and their sacred bural sites were treated. As has happened so many times before in the islands, they're just asking for bad luck by disturbing the iwi (bones).

    Lane,

You probably know about this, but that's not the first time Iwi have been mistreated.

I remember my prof at UH telling me about a Japanese Hotel that was being built on Kauai (I think), and the construction workers discovered bones.

Well, instead of contacting authorities like they're supposed to, they decided to pulverize the bones and mix them in with the sand on the beach.

Do you know of the hotel I'm talking about?

Not off the top of my head. Never spent much time on Kauai, but I think I've heard of that story before.

On my home island, Dole built a huge resort called the Manele Bay Hotel, right on top of some heiau and house sites (if anyone's been there, they are right below the pool on the walkway to the beach). They called in this amazing man named Uncle Sol Kaopuiki, the kupuna of the island (most respect elder, friend of my family too) to ask for forgiveness for moving the rocks (and undoubtedly bones, too). But before he could "make time" (heh heh)to come to the site, all kinds of bad shit started happening during construction of the hotel. People got hurt, eqipment broke down, one guy died when his truck lost its brakes coming down the hill.

Still, to this day, the elevator runs all by itself on most nights, and sometimes on the "Dolphin" wing fo the hotel, guests complain of a faint smell of dead fish (hallmark of akua or Hawaiian ghosts) and seeing faces on the doors, feeling weight on their chests and being awakened by strange noises.

Locals will tell you if you ever are awakened by a weight on your chest while sleeping and feel held down, stay down, because what's holding you down is one of your family members saving you from passing malevolent akua (night marchers) who will try to harm you. Personally, I've been scared shitless countless times while camping all over Lana`i, and I have the utmost respect for all types of ancient sites. Which starts with never shopping at WalMart on Ke`eaumoku if I ever go back to O`ahu again (unlikely).

I've never shopped at Wal-Mart and probably never will, but, that said, why all the controversy with them building stores? The story said there are already stores in the area, why not Wal-Mart? If one km is too close to the ruins, what would be an appropriate distance?

Im pretty sure that this is far from a rare instance. While in college I worked excavation for two summers during which time I heard of two instances where old graves were discovered and then promptly hidden before people found out. One was during the building of a massive hospital complex that was costing 100s of millions to build. The building was being built on a very old family farm whose graves I assume they were. One of the guys I often worked with was digging footers when he saw a bone, after investigating they found a 4-5 skeletons (very old skeletons). The foreman decided that they would lose enirely too much time and $$ if they told anyone so they just discarded of the bones with the fill and said nothing.

I take it they don't have any Walmarts under your rock?

My dad works for the state of California in a department that deals a lot with bad employers. Nationally, WalMart is one of the worst companies to work for. They're constantly being sued for not paying overtime, for firing people without provocation, for denying people breaks, for making injured employees work, etc., etc. I can only imagine what they'll try to get away with in Mexico.

My dad's construction company was laying pipe in LA one day, and they came across a bunch of dinosaur bones. The whole job shut down and they brought in a bunch of archeologists. Since it was a large government job, they were required to halt. Which also means they didn't get docked for delays.

Ok, this really freaks me out. I had this happen to me one night, but it was in Pasadena. It was the scariest thing I've ever experienced, and to this day I had no clue what it was.

I've had that happen a few times as well. I suspect it's a result of stopping breathing temporarily while asleep (sneep apnea or something similar), but that's just my best guess.

What, you don't think Mexicans need camo or snack cakes?

(I happen to think Wal-Mart kicks ass, but in this case - maybe not so much.)

Nope. I've had the wind knocked out of me several times. This was not comparable. I was breathing, I just couldn't move. And my limbs weren't asleep either. The was something at the foot of my bed; that's all I'll say.

This is called sleep paralasis. It's actually the gateway to having an out of body experience (or the astral world). If you want some info on this check out the book- Soul Traveller ,by Dr.Albert Taylor - he's a veteran of the USAF, a former NASA engineer(first black person employed by NASA),a development engineer for the F-117A Stealth Fighter, did satalite evaluation for StarWars(not the movie),etc.

    Sorry about the minor hi-jack.

    And yeah,....Wal-Mart is scum......
In its simplest terms, Wal-Mart is a front for the Rockefellers and the Red Chinese Secret Police. Wal-Mart know that their cheap prices are based on production by Chinese slave labor, in camps and factories operated by the Secret Police.Items that other stores sell for twenty dollars are sold by Wal-Mart for ten dollars. And Wal-Mart reportedly pays only twenty cents for the item made by slave labor.

the point isn't so much it's distance, but the effect that it will have on the small local businesses that have been there longer - i think what the locals fear the most is that their economy will be essentally killed by wal-mart's prices, etc.

I understand the trepidation of small business owners in the immediate area, but the economy? The economy in the area will improve greatly. There's an influx of money to the area, more jobs = more $$ being spent - whaddya mean?

by economy i was referring to local econ (small businesses). i know their economy will improve from the wal-mart, but it's gonna put a lot of established smaller local businesses in jeopardy
