    Bit Torrent Q (NSR)

So I have been using a Mac bit torrent program downloading stuff in hopes of getting all the simpsons episodes. I like the program and how much stuff is available on the infonet but the download speeds are really slow (i.e a season of the simpsons takes two days plus to download) I am using a cable modem with wireless for my connection. Is there anyway to speed up the download or a better protocol for downloading out there I should be using?

I don't know about Mac clients but I found there were massive differences in download speeds that I could get with different clients on my PC. eg Azureus was about 10x faster than Shareaza. Try some different clients. Also, you can try fiddling with the settings of the client - some can be really memory-heavy (eg by pinging each segment 400 times a second) and slow down your whole system and clog your cable bandwidth. There are probably some optimal settings for both you connection and your computer speed.

It's tedious but when you get it running properly you should be able to download at the maxinimu speed of your line - after playing around I could with almost every download.

Not to give you the old RTFM, but your BT client probably has built-in help, or a link to help forums where other people have had the same problems.

Oh, and a request from all the other BT users out there. When you're done downloading something, please leave your BT client open so that others may download from YOU! That's the only way the BT system works. I personally leave BTs open until I've uploaded 200% of what I've downloaded.

(You may already be smart enough to do that, but it's worth mentioning.)

I assume you have a router right? If so you have to forward some ports in the router settings in order for it to work. If you don't have the ports forwarded, then you will probably be stuck around 3kb/s for download speed.

What exactly does it mean to forward your port?
Since i am poaching my internet connection from my neighbors I dont think i can really ask them to forward their ports, but it would be good to know for the future.

The program I am using doesnt really have any options for changing the settings, I guess I will try downloading another program. Thanks for the advice guys.

well, I assume they have a router then, and if you find out what kind you might even be able to do this yourself. If its a linksys router, you go to 192.168.0.1 in your browser, and it should bring up a password prompt, I think linksys is usually blank for user and admin is the password, that is unless they changed it. Doing that will take you to a settings page, and theres a section about port forwarding, I think the ports you want to forward are 6881-6899 or something like that. Heres a site that tells you how to do it for most routers, www.lickmytaint.com go to the forums, and theres tons of bittorrent help posts.
