    Nor Cal Fires

Here's how the fires are looking from SLT today. I've heard it's nasty down in the valley.

Fortunate for us the winds are still (barely) blowing from the east - usually this basin fills up like a bathtub with any west slope smoke.

El Dorado County Fire - Closed Hwy 50:

I've been checking them out all day - wishing they were storm clouds rolling over that crest.

I'm about a 1/2 hr to 45 min. drive north of the Hwy 50 fire. The sun has barely shown through the smoke all day, and there's no hint of blue sky. There's little bits of ash everywhere. The smoke's thick enough to give me a headache. Sucks in every possible way.

Yup, that El Dorado fire looks nasty from over the hill.

'Fred's Fire' At 3,000 Acres; Hwy 50 Still Closed

KYBURZ, Calif. -- A 20-mile stretch of Highway 50 in the Sierra remained closed Thursday due to a wildfire burning in El Dorado County.

The fire -- known as "Fred's Fire" -- has burned about 3,000 acres and was about 10 percent contained as of noon Thursday. Officials said the fire was burning in a northwesterly direction toward Ice House Reservoir.

Residents of the towns of Kyburz and Silver Fork were asked to evacuate, according to the California Department of Forestry.

A pump house has been lost to the fire, but about 100 homes -- many of which are vacation cabins -- were spared, according to CDF spokeswoman Teri Mizuhara.

The fire broke out Wednesday evening. CDF and US Forest Service officials are investigating the cause.

Highway 50 was shut down between Sly Park and Meyers. Officials said there is no estimate for reopening the highway.

As an alternate route, the California Highway Patrol suggests taking Mormon Immigrant Trail off Highway 50 over to Highway 88 and then to Highway 89.

Yeah, it's pretty crazy looking from up here in Truckee, too. Hope they go out soon and no one gets hurt or loses property.

Yeah, the sky has been red all day. It's like a day long sunset.

Also, according to Martin Lipshits, you can ski up Icehouse Road.
This fire season was predicted to be hella bad for California, we're getting off pretty easy.

Fires are typically named after a physical/topographical name near the origin of the fire OR named after the event/smuck that either saw it first or started it.

"Fred's Fire" is named after Fred's Place. Fred's Place
is a bend in the road where there was a bar in the olden days. It is long gone. This location is half way between Eagle Rock Resort, now also long gone and the Wrights Lake road.

No, no, no... it was an ironic hella. Like having a mullet or listening to Poison. It's cool if you know it's not cool but you still act like it is cool even though it clearly isn't. Greydon's all over that hipster shit, he lives in the Mission.

This is getting nasty. Now both 50 and 88 are closed due to Fred's Fire and the Power Fire, respectively.

Fuck, Strawberry is awfully close to home. Let's hope this thing gets under control.

    Fred's Fire last night - 10% contained
    Fred's Fire this morning - 0% contained

Hwy Fitty may be down for awhile....

Spoke to soon on that one. Meyers was filled up like a thick bowl of smoke soup last night.
