A recliner, or in the absence, prop yourself up with lots of pillows and sleep in a somewhat upright position with your arm in the sling propped up. That did it for me. Make sure you get up to take your meds and ice.

going for an MRI on wednesday with contrast.... called an "anthragram" going to inject dye directly into the shoulder to increase visibility.

Sounds like tons of fun. If its torn its surgery time, but it will wait til SKI season is over....looks like summer backpacking might take a backseat this summer.

    Sucks ill tell ya that.

have actually found that an almost laying down position works for me which is exciting. got to take my dressing off and shower which was awesome.

overall feeling great. have good and bad times but ROM is steadily increasing. think i am 5 degrees or so external rotation at day 3.

    ski,
arthro gram is weird, doesnt hurt but the pressure was unnerving.

I am three weeks out at this point. Though it is going better than the left one did last year at three weeks, I am still easily wiped out and the pain is no picnic. I'm getting 4 or 5 hours of decent sleep a night.

Crackboy, sounds like you are doing great. Ah, youth.

I boiled my thermometer, and sure enough, this spot, which purported to be two thousand feet higher than the locality of the hotel, turned out to be nine thousand feet LOWER. Thus the fact was clearly demonstrated that, ABOVE A CERTAIN POINT, THE HIGHER A POINT SEEMS TO BE, THE LOWER IT ACTUALLY IS. Our ascent itself was a great achievement, but this contribution to science was an inconceivably greater matter.

damn. i don't want to jinx it but things are going awesome. 5-6 days out. pain is pretty minimal. i am down to 2-3 percs a day. for the most part it only hurts if i move too fast or funny. though it hurts more on shower day and my muscles are really tight. the dead arm hang down feels amazing. sleep has been surpisingly easy, i typically wake up once or twice but am essentially laying down. i think i am already at 15 degrees out and over 90 degrees up with my rom. though stifness is still an issue

next milestones are finishing my antibiotics which make me feel gross, and i still need to poop which is also making me feel crappy.

i din't think i was that young. will be 31 on monday

    Awesome dude.

And I agree, the no-shitting thing is worse than the surgery pain.

I think you can attribute the way things are going to the fact that you had this done through the arthroscopic method. I'm now over eight weeks post op on my full open bankart/capsular shift procedure and my ROM needs serious work. I was instructed not to move my arm for the six weeks I was in my sling so when I finally started passive PT, it was pretty stiff. My capsule must be tighter than virgin vagina, because it's taking some serious PT to gain ROM. For me, it's getting there, slowly but surely. I gain more movement with every visit and am working on it at home/work between my bi-weekly PT visits.

Lifting my arm out in front of me I can't get much farther than above shoulder level without seriously contorting my body, external rotation I can't get my arm past my side and moving my arm up from the side I can only get about shoulder level. I still can't get my arm behind my back either, so getting a belt on is still pretty fun.

Glad it's going well, just don't overdo it.

I had trouble sleeping with the sling on. Aside from being uncomfortable, I would wake up throughout the night after my hand had fallen asleep. Just take lots of percocet and enjoy.
FWIW: had the surgery on the 7th of Jan, was out of the sling after 4 weeks or so, and almost have my full ROM back. I can ride a bike around town too!
I couldn't go skiing even if there was snow. If I even tip over on that side it'd blow it.
No pain, some soreness. You may even be typing with both hands by now, if not then soon. Good Healing!
    No longer stuck.

    so quick update.

am totally off the pain meds now, incuding ibuprofrin. I was actually planning on attemping to go to work for a half day today but i haven't really been sleeping well the past day or two,. the sling is starting to wear my patience as i have just not been able to fid a comfortable position since everything is sore/tight and ican't really stretch anything.

i remember someone else said they felt lik ethey could feel the anchor sutures in their joint. i do get that a little as well as tiny little muscle spasms that feel like bubbles.

my range of motion is pretty good though i sort of feel like i have hit a wall, though it is probably to be expected sice i am still doing the basic ones they told me. I have my follow up tomorrow so hopefully i will get more to do.

all in all though i feel like i am recovering pretty fast so hoepfully wont need to be in the sling for the full 6 weeks

I am at 4 weeks. Getting ready to go for a walk without my arm in the sling, though when we get to the supermarket I will put in in the sling just for protection. Sleep is still kind of iffy but ROM is improving every day. I don't have a way to measure it now but I can walk my fingers up to about 4 inches above a doorjam. External rotation seems to be about 40 degrees. That's a guess. I can almost reach far enough behind me to wipe my ass. Don't think I'll be riding a bike for quite a while but I am hoping to start running in a couple of weeks. Just going for a longish walk (3.5 miles) last night really wiped me out but on my way to do it again. It's the only way to get it back.

    Keep pressin' on fellow labrites.

Hey crackboy, I joined your club yesterday! Pain free and numb still! . The doctor thought for sure that he'd be doing the Latarjet procedure but the tissue was still good enough to get good anchors in and to tighten the capsule good. He also cleaned up the bone. I was kinda disappointed thay he didn't do the Laterjet because I've read so much about it and know how impressed with the procedure Dr. Mark here is, but he didn't want me to loose any ROM unless he had to.

Thanks for all of the info that you've provided here. I wasn't even the slightest bit nervous! Knowledge is power!

Wow, great to find this thread. I am getting my second sugery on my shoulder on April 9th. I had my original labral repair 10 years ago and it held up for 2 years. In total I've dislocated about 15 times so it's the Leterjet for me this time. I'm more nervous this time as the last shoulder surgery I had was super painful. The doc wants to keep me overnight, which is fine with me as I'll get more time on the drip. Anybody had the Laterjet? I am assuming they still block your arm with an injection in your neck...I remember that really sucked as they missed the nerve the first 2 tries.

OK So mines a SLAP tear and a "moderate sized partial thickness joint surface tear supraspinatus" occupies more than 50% of the tendon.

Looks like it'll be surgery. Will know more march 22nd when i see the surgeron, ive been referred to a shoulder specialist. Apparently this is trickier than a "normal" rotator cuff type injury. Didnt ask if i should/could ski. I been skiing hard since the original accident on Dec 31. Im going to push it off as long as the surgeon thinks i can get away with it without damaging it further. I guess ill turn the skiing down just a notch until I know more.

    Hope you're all feeling better.

not surprised you have a slap with a torn supraspinatus they are pretty close together (based on definition of a slap tear)

how was the actual cuff in terms of injury? i think having the top torn would be easier to manage than the bottom or side

Five weeks now and still getting completely wiped out from going for a walk. I think it is residual effects of the general anaesthesia. Does anyone else notice that this has a lasting effect? I heard that to clear a general takes one day for every minute you were under. My surgery was 2.5 hours so if that is true (and I believe it) I will be getting clear sometime in July. My wife says I still moan with pain through the night. Sometimes I wake completely and sometimes it's just a fitful sleep. ROM is continuing to improve and I have not damaged the bicep tenodesis repair. I can cook and I can lift an empty frying pan but I don't dare try to lift anything heavier. Seeing my doc for a followup on Wednesday.

I don't notice any weird lasting effect from anesthesia and I was under for at least 2.5 hours. I do puke a bit afterwards but that only lasts about 24hrs or so.

the only effect i have from the anesthesia i that i get motion sick way easier now, though it is starting to go away. i was under 1.5 hour or so. walking is ok for me, but i really dont go crazy far.

tomorrow is my PT evaluation to see if i can handle the intensity of my script. going to see if i can get into a tshirt today

I'm four days post op. and have no side effects from being under at all. Have you talked to the doc? If not, I think you should.

I go for my pt eval. on Tuesday crackboy. We should compare notes. I'm completely off the pain meds now. Yeah. Now I'm trying to catch up on the fiber! :P

Hey...can anyone tell me how long you're actually out of work for with these surgeries?

    Thanks.
