    Accepting checks at ski swaps?

Seein as how the BD ski swap is this weekend, and I'll be trying to sell my skis, I was wondering about how people usually pay at these things. If someone wants to pay with a check, are there any precautions that people take? Or do you just hope it doesn't bounce? Any tips from ski swap veterans would be appreciated.

i don't know anyone that takes checks at swaps from people they don't know. you could take travelers checks/cashiers checks, but most people come with cash or can hit the atm quick if need be. if there are people coming with checks, then they may already have something other than paying in mind. if you want to take the risk, you can get a dl & ssn but you'd be better off taking their name and number for later contact if they still want the stix.

At the swaps around here, the swap hosting charity/shop/company usually handles all the money stuff, i.e. the buyer pays the shop with CC/check/cash and afterwards the shop gives you the money... though, sometimes they take around 10% cut for their services... That seems to work pretty well, but the swap you are going to might be different.

black diamond's swap is more like a flea market. it looks like everyone is tailgating in the parking lot with a ton of gear. there is no middle man to change the currency. cash is the best policy.

Similar to Egos's area, the swaps 'round these parts are put on by the local ski patrol. They deal with all the money and give you a check, but take 20%.

I wouldn't except a check, unless it was from a ski shop or maybe the promoter. ('cept for trustworthy mags of course.)

Great, thanks for the advice. I won't feel weird declining checks or asking for a different form of payment now.
