    Experience with Digital Cameras?

I want a digital camera to take skiing pics and downhill biking pics. (lots of action shots- so, I think I need a fast shutter speed???) I'm also goin for 4 megapixels. Well, I found a couple that I'm lookin at real close: Nikon Coolpix 4200 and Canon Powershot s410.
Anyone used these cameras or brands? What should be looking for? Feedback? Thanks a lot.
-You can imagine where it goes from here.
    -He fixes the cable?

    Tech talk, search function.

This was all discussed in the last two weeks.

There are some good sites listed in the thread too.

Use at least ASA 400 film.

Lol, Karl Hungus. A friend of mine does a radio show once a week under the name Karl Hungus. Big Lebowski is a great movie.

If you are concerned with shutter speed, then make sure you get a camera that has a shutter priority mode. (tv on your camera's mode dial) Both of those listed should have such a thing.

One thing you might want to look for is Exposure compensation mode. Snow tricks your light meter in your camera to think it's brighter out than it actually is. If you have exposure compensation on your camera you can then tell it to overexpose by 2/3 or 1 stop. That will take care of that snow problem to a degree. I believe the Canon Powershot G3/G5 has those features. The G3 can be found for under $300 I believe. I'd guess that the 2 cameras you have listed have that feature but not 100% sure.

I've got the Canon S400; my fiance has the S410 (basically the same). I checked out a *LOT* of cameras before I went with the Canon, and have been very pleased with the photo quality & ease of use.

I looked at the Nikon Coolpix line; some general comparisons vs. the Canon:

Nikon - plastic case; Canon - almost all metal
    Nikon bulkier than Canon
Nikon has more shutter lag than Canon (the time it takes to "take" a picture after you push the button)
Canon's autofocus system gets rave reviews
Nikon Coolpix line could (at the time) be found for less $, but not a lot ($20-40)

    I have an A70 I'll sell ya for $170
    3.2MP
2.5 frames per second for 15 frames (you can't beat that with any camera under $500)
Manual, Auto, Shutter & Aperature Priority, Scene modes
1/2000th Shutter speed (15 seconds for long exposures).
    3 minutes/clip of 320x240 video
30sec/clip of 640x480 video (rare high resolution for a digi p&s)
Lens is equivelent to a 35-105mm 2.8-4.8 (3x optical zoom plus 3x digizoom)

I've had it for less than a year (bought for $300) but I have replaced it with the S45.

I have the Nikon 4100. Just getting to the second page of the instructions. But they are pretty slick. I can actually shoot about a 1 minute video with it. The guys you should really ask this are bakerboy and mbs. I think his website is still up www.grantgunderson.com

One last thing, check in the specs about operating temperatures for whatever one you decide on. Some digicams are known to not work AT ALL in cold temperatures.
