The out-of-state firm [Voters Outreach of America, AKA America Votes] has been in Las Vegas for the past few months, registering voters. It employed up to 300 part-time workers and collected hundreds of registrations per day, but former employees of the company say that Voters Outreach of America only wanted Republican registrations.

Two former workers say they personally witnessed company supervisors rip up and trash registration forms signed by Democrats.

"We caught her taking Democrats out of my pile, handed them to her assistant and he ripped them up right in front of us. I grabbed some of them out of the garbage and she tells her assisatnt to get those from me," said Eric Russell, former Voters Outreach employee.

Eric Russell managed to retrieve a pile of shredded paperwork including signed voter registration forms, all from Democrats. We took them to the Clark County Election Department and confirmed that they had not, in fact, been filed with the county as required by law.

So the people on those forms who think they will be able to vote on Election Day are sadly mistaken. We attempted to speak to Voters Outreach but found that its office has been rented out to someone else.

The landlord says Voters Outreach was evicted for non-payment of rent. Another source said the company has now moved on to Oregon where it is once again registering voters. It's unknown how many registrations may have been tossed out, but another ex-employee told Eyewitness News she had the same suspicions when she worked there.

It's going to take a while to sort all of this out, but the immediate concern for voters is to make sure you really are registered.

Call the Clark County Election Department at 455-VOTE or click http://www.accessclarkcounty.com/election/lookup.asp to see if you are registered.

The company has been largely, if not entirely funded, by the Republican National Committee. Similar complaints have been received in Reno where the registrar has asked the FBI to investigate.

    ============

What was I just saying in the Kerry thread? "The Republicans' goal is to end democracy in America"? Better get off your ass and vote and write letters and protest. Things can always get worse, and they will, unless you do something positive to get the Republicans out of power and into jail where they belong.

Republican groups tearing up Democratic registrations. Democrats registering fake people. The system is broke and needs to be fixed. Ideas?

The best idea I can come up with is to have people people come in to DMV offices to renew their licenses/ID at age 18.

As they process the license/ID renewal, they are registered.

Yes that's called the Motor Voter Bill and it was the first Bill that Bill Clinton signed when he took office. I'm not sure why it didn't take effect, I have to do some research.

I am very certain that Clinton signed this Bill because my best friend was responsible for pushing it through and flew to Washington to be there when it was signed. I have the news reports on vhs, still. Patrick has since passed away (from AIDs), but ran Rock the Vote in it's early (and very effective) days.

In CO you are required to change your addy within 30 days of a change of residence. shouldn't be that hard to be registered.

    mr_g,

The issue here isn't getting registered, it's making sure your registry is processed.

I just renewed my license in Utah, checked the little box that said yes, I would like to register and never recieved anything, like a form to fill out or a card or anything.

Then I walked thru the link Woodsy provided here a bit back and tried it thru that means. Hope all is good to go.

Maybe I was good to go thru the DMV?? Going to DMV site to see what I can find.

Kind of similar situation here. When I switched my DL from Utah to WA this past summer, checked the box, filled out the forms, etc... Never got anything in the mail or notice that I was confirmed. Ended up having to call the King Country Elections people that verified to me over the phone... said they would flag my record so I would have a voter card mailed.

semantics. registered would mean that the act of registering is completed.

when you get your driver's license in CO. you get REGISTERED.
