FCC COMMISSIONER COPPS CRITICIZES SINCLAIR CORPORATE DECISION TO PREEMPT LOCAL STATIONS FOR POLITICAL BROADCAST

Commissioner Michael J. Copps reacted to reports that Sinclair Broadcast Group will preempt more than 60 local stations across the country to air an overtly political program in the days prior to the Presidential election.

Copps stated: “This is an abuse of the public trust. And it is proof positive of media consolidation run amok when one owner can use the public airwaves to blanket the country with its political ideology -- whether liberal or conservative. Some will undoubtedly question if this is appropriate stewardship of the public airwaves. This is the same corporation that refused to air Nightline’s reading of our war dead in Iraq. It is the same corporation that short-shrifts local communities and local jobs by distance-casting news and weather from hundreds of miles away. It is a sad fact that the explicit public interest protections we once had to ensure balance continue to be weakened by the Federal Communications Commission while it allows media conglomerates to get even bigger. Sinclair, and the FCC, are taking us down a dangerous road.”

    END
ok, i think we all agree on this - either from the left or right, this is dangerous territory folks. so, what do they plan to DO about this??? does the FCC have any authority to tell Sinclair to can this blatant abuse of our civili liberties?

i don't think so, but seeing as how they just fined FOX $1.2Million for some reality tv thing, they could probably put the company under if they wanted to.

I just wrote this, so if anyone else wants to send it have at it:

    To Whom it May Concern:
It is disgraceful that a publicly held company such as yourselves lacks the tact and moral bearing to play what is obviously political propoganda on the public airwaves in such close proximity to the election. The panning you have received throughout the medea is fully deserved because of the clear evidence that your actions illegally (see FEC rules) manipulate public opinion to further your own personal interests in an election. Please refrain from showing "Stolen Honor" and by doing so follow both the legal guidelines set down by the FEC and show some sense of a basic moral bearing. If you ever intend to expand your operations into parts of the country that are more open-minded in their ideas, the massive blow to your credibility that showing "Stolen Honor" will cause will place you upon the same level as checkout-line junk magazines at Supermarkets. Do not attempt to justify your programming as "fair and balanced" by inviting Senator Kerry to participate. Showing an hour movie slandering someone and then giving them a brief period cannot be judged as fair by any logic.
If you do not refrain from showing "Stolen Honor," I personally will call the local advertisers of each of your stations and express my discontent with that station and encourage them to forever leave you. I will further encourage my friends and family to do the same. Showing "Stolen Honor" is not the right decision either morally, legally, or for the best interests of your stockholders, to whom you are most responsible.
    Sincerely,
