I've never quite understood why people worry about the baggage handlers throwing their skis around. Your skis can (and do) take a lot of abuse when they're attached to your body. Do you really think that being dropped 5 feet will hurt your skis any more than a hard landing in the park, or skiing bumps?

It's not so much the skis I worry about, it's the bindings. Both my stepdad and myself have arrived at our destinations to find a heel piece snapped off due to abusive baggage handling(although they were Marker's). This happened even with plenty of extra clothing protection around them. Now with my Look's all I have to do is slide the heel pieces off store them in the boot/clothes bag and no more worries.

Well, many trips to NZ and domestic trips have taught me:

Generally, have had no problems bringing multiple sets of skis.

    1) If you go to the counter, smile and be SUPER nice.

    2) Make sure your bag is less than 50 lbs. (Air NZ will not let you pay more, they make you take stuff out)

    3) Last trip: 3 pairs of skis - 2 pairs of bindings in a Dakine 200 cm roller bag. The trick was to take a pair of bindings off so they could all fit. Just under 50 lbs.

    4) It helps if you are at a status level like "Premier, or Premier Exec" at United. My wife is Premier Exec and I'm Premier so this probably has helped me in the past. They sometimes don't even weigh your bags, and at certain levels you are allowed more weight than the non-status customers.

    5) If you are travelling with people, remember they can have a ski bag too. Don't think that its easier to combine your bags, if that bag is over 50lbs you'll be charged or won't get on the flight. Moral of the story, bring as many bags as allowed, you never know when you'll have to lessen/add weight.

....never thought of the Sky Cap....may have to try that.
