Living the good life.
Wouldn't you think these guys could put a vidcam up there instead of some pos that does or does not take a pic every five minutes?
I wish it was suny like that in Portland right now.
Your dog just ate an avocado!
it's not sunny in Portland?![]()

Looks like it only burped.
I went to Mt. Lassen over the weekend to attend a field trip for geo-industry professionals that was supposed to be led by a highly respected and well known volcanologist with the U.S.G.S. Unfortunately, he got called away to work up at Mt. St. Helens, so he couldn't attend. As such, the field trip was rather disorganized. I still learned some nifty stuff about volcanoes, and a tiny bit about Mt. St. Helens, too. Mostly, I learned about the geologic history of the Lassen Natl. Park area, which doesn't have much relevance to the Mt. St. Helens area... oh well. It was still fun!![]()
Who was the volcanologist that was supposed to lead your trip?
Also, talked with some folks at HVO on Friday, they sent over one of the cameras they developed that we installed on the rim of Kilauea's Pu`u O`o vent Pu`u O`o Live Cam to be installed on the rim of St. Helens' crater within the next few days. Will bemuch better than the Forest Service camera...
Looks like the top came off the lava dome on that burp.
Maybe growing a little too.
It's a lot bigger than when I flew a small plane up through the cone about ten years ago.
Lane - It was supposed to be led by Dr. Michael Clynne. I don't know much about him. We did have Patrick Pringle on the trip (he just showed up to tag along), who was working for the USGS shortly after the 1980 eruption. He has a few books out and several published papers on Mt. St. Helens. Very cool guy.
I was fortunate enough to be in a plane taking off from PDX on Friday at about noon when helens blew the first time. I was also fortunate enough to be on the left side of the plane (to Atlanta). I also was on the right side of the plane coming in this morning at 10:15 right when it burped today. Pretty sweet. I snapped some digis of it all and i'll try to get them up tomorrow.
ROBOTS ARE EATING MY FACE.

Ubersheist, I really love Lassen NP, and have returned to visit several times. Not being able to take a cool field trip like that, we had to settle for the little booklet about roadside geological features and a hike to Bumpass Hell (like another planet). They didn't really state if it was connected to ANY other volcanic/hot spot areas.
Lane, thanks for letting us know as you know. I'm trying to feel the excitement vicariously. The new camera would be essential , I think! Who's in charge of the funding?![]()
We got ash on our cars in 1980 down in the LA area!
"Shhhh! I hear a snowflake!"
Sheeeat...I flew out of Spokane to SF on May 17, 1980, the day before St. Helens blew. Didn't bother going back for my car in the airport parking lot for 78 days. Driving in the ash storms was killing engines left and right. Even then, the ash never quit dripping out of the body every time I washed it for the next three years. I remember piles of ash off the sides of the roads, plowed like snow, around Yakima.

I guess Helen's is becoming quite the tourist trap. On the radio this morning, they talked to some dude was selling t-shirts with the saying "Mt St Helen's, Kicking Some Ash".
"A lack of planning and preparation on your part does not make it an emergency on my part."
Turn on yer boob-tube, 'cause she's belching pretty good right now...
That's so cool of the Forest Service and other federal agencies to make sure it blows during the day for optimal viewing.
That was nice of them.... Is it hard to ski lava?
Just gotta catch it before it sets up.
Yeah baby, and you are probably using those old-styling all-aluminum wide-body Volants to carve it!Originally Posted by splat

I was fortunate enough to be flying 25 miles to the west of the mountain yesterday when she let off some steam and ash - spectacular!!! It was a picture perfect moment.
