    Waiting period for membership?

It seems like there's been more and more spam being posted on the site, and I was trying to think of a way to reduce it. What about instituting a 24-48 hour waiting period between when someone signs up for the forum and when they can begin posting. It seems like this would discourage spammers, but not be too big of a hassle for people legitimately wanting to become part of our community. Afterall, most people lurk here for weeks or months before deciding to join anyway. What's another day or two?
As far as the logistics, I was thinking that you could just set the delay into the program that sends out the address verification email. Basically they'd fill out the sign-up form, then it would be a couple days before they got the email with the link to complete the membership.

I like it. I'm a low poster myself, but a reader for a long time and member for a while. Could do a minimum post count before you can post in a forum like Gear Swap, or a waiting period, email confirmation, or I like all of the above.

minimum post count of 5-10 before a new member can post any links or images
free PHP scripts to do this available @ vBulletin forum

this combined with the CAPTCHA we already have will make life much easier for the bouncers

    in the meantime, flag spam!

Given that somebody just super-spammed the site...any ideas on this plan from the admins? Is it something that would be implementable?

This was something discussed a long time ago. The consensus was they didn't want to bar first time people from posting immediately if they wanted to.

And no, there isn't any more spam than usual. I'm just not spending all waking moments cleaning up the shit anymore. Now do you guys see what I was doing being my evil admin self???

A long time ago the bots were less prevalent too, no?

what about highangle's thought, of no links until 10 posts? That seems like a no-brainer. A little tougher if the script also restricts images, but my guess is you can set it either way...

[the idea here is to generate less work for ya admin-breath]

Well they were here daily but they never got their 15 posts in before I got them...

It's up to big T what he wants to do. When we discussed this at a meeting some time ago (years), I suggested a waiting period and they were 100% firmly against any sort of restriction on new users.

The problem is there is so many times when you want people to jump in and post if they have valuable info. When tragedy or triumph strikes an individual and people post a thread about it on this site the family or close friends often want to jump in. I'd hate to see their ability to do that restricted.

I hate spammers though. I like the link and photo restrictions, maybe limit the number of posts per day for a while.

Didn't think about that aspect. Also not trying to bitch or create more work for admins. Just trying to come up with helpful ideas.

Place a disclaimer in the registration that states something along the lines of spamming is considered advertising and as suck subject to an advertising fee of XXX per add posted then just utilize a collection company to collect.

Don't most of the spammers front for some shit company? Let the collection company have at them. I imagine collection companies work for a percentage of the sum to be collected.
I don't work and I don't save, desperate women pay my way.

you guys still don't fucking get it:

    fuck a waiting period
if you don't let a spambot post a link or image, it can't complete it's program=spambot fail

a human can change a link to make it a notlink, if he has less than 10 posts and has some overwhelmingly vital data to share with the community in a link

a 10 post minimum before links or images will kill the vast majority of spambots BEFORE they ever post the first time

a 10 post minimum before posting links or images will NOT stop a new member from posting

a waiting period sucks for a new guy
a 10 post min before links or images doesn't

One thing some forum sites do is prevent creating of new threads until a new poster has x number of responses to existing threads.

    Just a thought...

    This will never work.
    It makes too much sense.

I reported it... curious how many others did too? Advres, now that you've entered into this (Favre-esque?) semi-retirement, does your phone still go off when these get reported? Every time, or just once per spammer?

I understand why they would want to avoid that but the current situation is going to have the same effect on potential new users.

For someone who doesn't know the place yet:
    Lot of spam=no mods=dead forum=waste of time=mov'n on

Right now we have a lot of spam.
it's all young and fun and skiing and then one day you login and it's relationship advice, gomer glacier tours and geezers.

no linkage until 10 posts sounds like a good plan.

And what you guys don't obviously fucking get is that I DON'T RUN THE COMPANY.

Back in the day we had a meeting. The suit, Hot tate, myself and TGR420 all sat down and discussed this forum at length. Pros, cons, dos, don'ts... All four of us are rather smart people and in this meeting pretty much everything was discussed/explained/reasoned.

Now, many ideas were shot down and the fact remains, it is entirely up to the owners of TGR how they manage their website.

Dude we know you don't own the site, or there'd be a tattoo forum, duh. but you're an or the admin. So we hope you can think about a new idea, based on a newer script, to ban links or images for ten posts, thus nuking 90%+ of the spam. If that's dumb, why, and if it's not help make it happen!

I hate to mention this. It's been a while since I cared or posted regularly on that other site, but I don't ever remember this being a problems at TTips. I'd prefer not to be on TTips, but this is a situation where we should be "better" than they are. Why do the squares get to hang out on their forum without weeding through the spam??
