    Mount Marcy

Just trying to gauge the interest level in a maggot outing to ski Mount Marcy this winter. For those of you who don't know its the highest peak in NY 5,344, about 9 miles outside of Lake Placid. Would be an all day tour supposedly really good skiing up there if the weather is nice

    In theory, yes.

It all depends on 'when' though.

We've just worked our asses off for mediocre snow and questionable terrain. The only skiable line is the hiking trail we just skinned up. It's narrow, boot-packed, and populated by dozens of snowshoers sporting earth-tone L.L. Bean jackets and daypacks. Worse yet, the pitch is more or less green-circle shallow.
yeah, the terrain is supposed to be killer!

Don't know about Marcy, but there is talk of exploring the Eastern backcountry this year. The rough plan is one trip a month to somewhere. Adirondacks are high on the list. There's a good book out there by David Goodman that describes plenty of routes.

Sick and ashamed and happy (and look out: gapers armed with backcountry books!),

Very interested in some East Coast BC. I've been up there in the summer and would be down with checking out this winter.

...keeping in mind that within my crew there has also been talk of water ramp trips, urban assaults, and a return to the Chic-Chocs every year.

None of which have happened yet.

Sick and ashamed and happy (and it took us 3 years to get to Tucks...),

Ok, then what about Wright Peak, Mt Colden, Gothics, and Dix mountain those would be a bit more challenging for you? I was just thinking of Marcy as it would allow more people of lesser ability to join in but if we're going to just be total extremo mountain dudes and ski the steepest shit we can find we can do that too

In terms of ski terrain in the Adirondack backcountry, Mount Marcy is pretty low on the list of must ski's. Big Slide, Colden and several others offer amazing steep chute skiing if you have the knowledge and conditions co-operate. There are plenty of amazing open hardwood forests to ski in the region too, with some that have 2000+ foot vertical drops. Marcy is not very steep and too exposed to wind to be worth the trip unless conditions are absolutely amazing or you simply want to say you've skiied NY state's highest peak.

I would be down with some lower angle bc in the 'dacks and any tree skiing that anyone would wanna do, but I think Marcy isn't the best idea. In addition, I don't posses the knowledge or the skill to ski the best slides the 'dacks have to offer. As for creekbeds and glades, thats a whole other story. Sorry I can't suggest actual peaks, but pretty much any trailhead between the towns of Keene Valley and Lake Placid must have something noteworthy nearby.
