    Aspen lodging suggestions

Anyone? It sounds like Aspen is where my ski group is headed this winter. Typically we go for some kind of mid-range condo. It's usually a group of 6-8 guys.

Should we stay in Aspen or at Snowmass? It seems to me Snowmass could be a little boring, but we don't really party like rock stars anymore.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Places to avoid good to know, too!

What are you looking for? What's your budget? Skies the limit or something more reasonable? (Obviously, you're not going low budget....)

    Stay in town, for sure.

Go to www.friasproperties.com - they have good condos at reasonable prices - look for the "budget" listings.

Definitely not sky's the limit. I'd say something around $500/night is a good target. Could probably go a little higher if necessary.

Definitely stay in town. Even if you don't party like a rock star, it's still nice to walk around town. Plus the best skiing is Aspen Mountain and Highlands, Snowmass is ok, but there is a lot of dickin around to get the goods. When are you going?

Probably the first half of February. We haven't decided for sure, but that usually works out good for prices and crowds. The down side is that's the same time as the JH summit!

X games are 1/29 -2/3 and Comedy Fest is 2/9-13. Either would be a very good time. We can give you the skinny later if you want. If you don't score with Mimi let me know. I worked real estate in Aspen for many years but I've been out of the loop, but I still know some good people.

Thanks for the info so far everyone. One of the other guys on the trip is actually planning this year, but I just wanted to edumacate myself. It will probably be another couple weeks before he gets things going in earnest.

Now hopefully we can find some decent airfares...

Oh boy... here we go again...

I personally like Snowmass better then the other two hills. I like the terrain a whole lot more. It doesn't matter to me that it takes a long time to get back up to the top of Hanging Valley or the Cirque, and that each time requires some hiking (for the most part). Of course, we all know that Highlands Bowl is awesome, but the rest of what I've seen at Highlands doesn't really do it for me. Aspen Mountain is a good, demanding, technical mountain, but I'm not that into skiing double fall line bumps or super tight aspens, so I tended to avoid Ajax when I was living in CO.

Different strokes for different folks... Shredhead and Karl are both kick-ass skiers (and pretty darn cool guys, too) who know thier sh!t, so you can't discount what they prefer, either...

Stay in town. It'll be way more fun then staying in Snowmass.

As far as places to avoid... hmm... that's a tough one... I can't think of anywhere in Aspen that I'd necessarily avoid. Try to get a place close in town where you can walk to the pedestrian malls. Be sure to get that! There's a few nice rentals off of Cemetary road. They're nice, but you can get just as nice a place closer to town. There's some rentals up towards Red Mountain, near Buttermilk, or off Maroon Creek, Owl Creek or Spring Creek areas that are swanky as anything anywhere, but they're pretty far from anything - great if you're bringing the family, but not so good if you're with a bunch of adults.

Oh yeah... avoid the J Bar near closing if you're married or have a girlfriend, or if you're choosy about who you go home with...

    Stay at the tyrolean.

Tyrolean right on main street is cheap. Also, the St.Moritz is a good spot for a groupm nice group atmosphere and a good outdoor pool.
