    Talking Downieville TR 9/25/04

    Hardrider got seven flats

    he is now Flatrider.

he used all my tubes, all his tubes, all of Arty's tubes...and then he blew through all his patches. For all I know he's still up there stuffing leaves in this tires....

yeah, man I had a great time yesterday. It felt like a ski day

the town rules. i love how your just driving through all theses forested canyons, gorges, twisty roads, almost seems backwoods, and then you come up on this oasis. this funky town with one-lane bridges, funky houses, some pubs, more bike shops than banks or grocery stores, and killer burritos. there's more bikes than cars in the streets. and everyone is either just getting back from a ride, gearing up for a ride, and just plain 'old stoked.

the trails rule. i can't even begin to describe the sheer downhill bliss of 3rd divide trail. it's still even holds its charm over hardrider's screaming curses as he got his 6th and 7th flats of the day respectively there .

i didn't' ride my Superlight, but rented a Specialized Demo 9 from Downieville Outfitters. my first time ever riding a DH bike. it was like riding a dog gamned sofa. just point it over anything and laugh. now i want one

i want a summer mtn bike cabin there.

arty & hardrider -- thanks for showing me the trails. get back up there in 2 weeks?

It was long, it was frustrating, in the end though it was a fun day.

    That is all.

Second saturday in Oct there is the epic ride which'll be a 40ish mile ride lots o climbing with planned rest stops for food (and beer). That evening there'll be a kicking party with live music. Then Sunday, I'll probably do a car shuttle or two.

Fellow Maggots.... It appears to be time for yet another intervention. One among us has allowed the rigors of daily life to come between him and his sworn duty to persue adventure and debauchery whereever it may be found. His claims that "work" prevent him from discharging his duty must be met with skepticism, because as we all know, work is merely the vessel by which we finance our true purpose.

Mend your ways LPH, or we shall descend upon you and reeducate you in the ways of the Maggots.

I never thought I'd bonk going downhill, but it almost happened yesterday. For some inexplicable reason, I hadn't slept at all the previous three nights (thanks to a full day of riding, NyQuil, and Lagavulin I crashed hard last night). I was feeling good until the first flat. The second provided an even nicer delay. So when we finally decided to take 2nd Divide, I almost died on the "rolling" terrain. "I just wanna go to sleep."

Thankfully lunch provided a nice pick me up and we killed it until flat number 4, 5, 6, and 7. What Shoe forgot to mention was that flats 5 and 6 involved multiple patches.

Still it was a great day. We got to inagurate Shoe to Downieville, ride some killer singletrack, and make endless fun of flatrider. What more can one ask for?

As for a return trip in two weeks, I can only offer a maybe. It all depends of if the Dodgers hold on to 1st and make the playoffs. Then I might be in LA for the playoffs.

    Nice one flatrider haha.

When I rode the Downieville DH (whatever the famous 16-mile DH race course is...forgot the name), I did it on a borrowed hard tail and thought I had the all-time record with 5 flats. Good to see someone took that nefarious title away from me! Hehe. Heh. Huh.

Ya, but flatrider's number of 7 was over the course of two runs. if you had 5 in one descent that record still might hold.

ya, but flatrider coulda had even more if we hadn't run out of tubes & patches.

so particle might have the record for a single run, but we'll have to put an asterisk by it.

Well (your new bike) the RM9, has only had one flat this whole summer. That was a pinch flat when I was running under 15 psi. So at 20 psi, you should be bullet proof.

BTW, you're supposed to pull the nail out of the tire before you put the new tube back in.
I want a 6" travel 20lb MTB. I found the 20lb MTB, but only good for riders under 87 pounds.

Does a guy named Greg still run Downieville Outfitters? I met him a while back when he and his brother-in-law (who we called "Denver" 'cause he looked exactly like John Denver) were first starting the company. Good people up there. I never got a chance to ride there, though. Maybe one of these days.

Greg Long is the guy I'm thinking of. I used to live at Squaw with the guy who built the Downieville Outfitters Web site, too. Small world, I guess.

Glad you guys got out there and got some (even if you did have to limp along a bit with many, many flats). I'll be working on getting back up there one more time before the season ends.

We rode Skeggs down here, which was definitely super fun. That Blue Blossom simply rocks!!! Has a bit of the 3rd Divide feel too it - screaming fast, super tight singletrack.

Generally, when you jerry rig bike handlebars into a new shifter, heavy sarcasm is involved in any response to the fix.

Are there really two companies now? I thought it was another name change.

Trivia: What was the name of the first Downieville downhill shuttle company (it was started by the same Greg along with a few other guys)?
