Question Batch image size conversion? (NSR but photo-related)

I have a lot of pictures from SA. I need to size a bunch of them down to 640x480 (or 480x640) so I can post them here. What tool can I use to automate this, i.e. just drag/select the pictures and have them batch converted and saved under a different filename?

I have Photoshop but its automation doesn't seem to do image size...am I missing something? Is there some freeware I can grab?

Fireworks has a batch process mode that will resize, rename, and save to a subdirectory. its not freeware, but you can get a 30 day trial version.

I dont know photoshop too well, but i would have to assume there is a way to do it.

The GIMP is free and has a perl scripting interface so you could make that do whatever you want. if you can figure out how.

<edit>http://graphicssoft.about.com/librar...blps_batch.htm i didnt read much of the article, but it looks like it may have your answer.

I'm not sitting at a box with PShop on it, so I may be off, but the best way to do this is in Photoshop, at least with the most control.

What you have to do is turn on the history recording tool, and then go through the resize process with one image, saving it in a location where you eventually want all images to go, and then turn off the recorder. Save your actions as a batch, and then go to "File/Automate" and choose your action set as the command to run. If you're not a PShop wizard, it might take you a few tries, but you'll get it. The help has a good tutorial.

Another way I just thought of is via one of these shareware programs:

I’m sure adobe ps can do it but that program is too complex for me. Try a simpler program…they allow you to batch. Or just do it one at a time if need be…where’s your dedication to the stoke man?!

You could also wait for some maggots familiar with PS to help you out. I'm sure someone will chime in soon with directions.

Looks like you got what you needed in Photoshop, but if you want another application, try the freeware version of Graphics Workshop from these folks.

easythumbnail works great and has a ton of settings.

the photoshop way is the best though. I generally set up color correction, resizing and a few other things as a rule and apply it to a bunch of stuff at once, go back and tweak them individually.

There's image browsing program called ACDSee. It allows for viewing folders full of photos in thumbnails, adding keywords for a database, resizing, and format conversion.

You whould be able to download a 30-day trial of their website: www.acdsee.com

    Thanks!

    Photoshop works for me now.

Unfortunately it's not smart enough to figure out whether something's horizontal or vertical format, so I have to do the two separately. But it's way easier than doing all of them by hand.

    Expect some SA pictures soon.

The other thing about ACDSee is that you can select all of those photos that need to be rotated and do a batch rotation....much faster than photoshop.

The demo is a full-working version BTW.

i think if you figured out what change in dpi from your original file size would give you the right pixel dimensions, then you could just record a change in dpi and use that in your batch file conversion for both vertical and horizontal at the same time. maybe?

    percentage

i dont know if its applicable for the other apps here, but with irfanview you can resize based on a percentage (keeping the aspect ratio the same). so it doesnt matter if your files are horizontal or vertical. you can also in batch do things like adjust color, gamma, contrast, rotate (!), change jpg compression, etc.

    did i mention its free?
